That SAyid needed to take the pill on his own accord to actually kill his "spirit, soul" or whatever appears to be left. Seems like the only reason they would try and get jack to do it.
that would makes sense. Especially since Doogan told Jack that it wouldn't work unless he took it on his own.
Jack and Doogan had this conversation already. And, it seemed strange that he would tell Jack it wouldn't work unless he took it freely.

Candidates are defiantly protected. Dogan said so in latin in the last episode when Hurley told him off.
Something else I read that seem very interesting. The song Jack's son plays was also played by Faraday and the writing in David's sheet music was also similar to Faraday. I am wondering is Faraday is David's teacher off the island.
eta...fixed due to previous brain fart.

It also refers to the Season 1 episode "House of the Rising Sun", which is also the 6th episode of each of their seasons.
That's the episode which introduced "Adam and Eve".

All of that is in SeanieB's recap video

This is why Dogan (or another Other) could not give the pill to Sayid.
I don't believe it has anything to do with free will on Sayid's part.

does that mean that the Darkness(infection) takes over?

does Sayid even have a choice on the whole "darkness?" or is he just screwed. Uber-Claire, Sayid, MIB and (sawyer) would be a pretty good team

Uh...yeah. Your two best fighters, a psychotic murdering mother with nothing to lose ala Friday the 13th, and a mind reading, teleporting, super strong immortal shape shifting monster...

Some disagree but I see Sayid as having to choose whether to live(infected) or die. If we are to believe that he is still a candidate and the the Others cannot kill him.. Then who can? I think that only he can choose to die whether knowingly or not.

Out of any show in history, Lost may have the worst parents. Aside from maybe Hurley's mom and Jin's father, is there a single decent parent in the entire show?

I actually think that is part of the story's big picture. This was why it was important showing Jack being a "good father" in the parallel timeline.

Well, I think we can safely assume that it won't end pretty. Maybe we can even start taking bets as to who gets killed off in this episode.
