People that think PTA's films are too pretentious may like Hard Eight. It was before he settled into his discernable directing style, but has some of his 3-name regulars in it (Philip Baker Hall, John C Reilly, Philip Seymour Hoffman). It's not his best film, but it's good and probably his most accessible.

Magnolia is so damn close to being a masterpiece, it makes me angry. Cut the early worm scenes (that basically disappear after anyway) and the sing-along and it's there. The concept is absolutely brilliant though.
Overall, TWBB is a better film but I do place Magnolia over Boogie Nights

Off topic but hard 8 has my favorite character development detail
Sam Jackson asks to bum a cig off of John C Riely.
John pulls out a non-menthol pack
Jacksons turns it down and pulls out his own
