But because of its lineage, it's just o
I'm not sure thats true. Austin Butler is awful. Like possibly the worst acting job in the history of television. His character is an unnatural, over acted, shallow caricature that distracts the viewer every time he is on the screen. Don't worry though cuz he's only the main character and is on the screen 75% of the time.
Is the show even based on any source material? BoB and the Pacific were based on books that were written by actual WW2 vets and you could feel the realism in the story as a result. This show feels like a 2024 Hollywood dunce writing a script about what he thinks WW2 might have been like, not what it was actually like based on first hand experience. They also failed to lay any backstory for the pilots. There isn't homelife before they ship off like the Pacific or training camp bonding like BoB. The characters are just thrust into battle and we are just supposed to care? the only character they tried to give back story on at all is Austin Butler but all they showed is that he is a stereotypical "straight laced guy that doesn't gamble or drink and has his dame waiting for him back state side."
I agree that this show is tied to BoB but I disagree that it would be liked without that tie. IMO, it wouldn't even be watched if it weren't for people's love for BoB and the Pacific.
I will probably finish it, because why not, but so far this show absolutely blows.

Austin Butler didn't bother me but I never watched the Elvis movie that was the source of so much of the complaint.
I think any half-decent WWII show on HBO would be successful, so yeah, I think it would be well liked regardless just due to the subject matter. I'm not some advocate for it though, so I think it's reasonable not to like it. I especially thought the comment about it being forgettable likely rings true for a lot of folks.
I think it had that 2020s Disney-ish feel that comes with so much CGI advancement (1917, Hacksaw Ridge). Lacked the grit of BOB/Pacific, too much polish. But I'm not sure how much you can avoid that in a series about WWII bombers.

I wasn't a big fan of the show, but that's just not even close to being true. Even if you don't like the Elvis voice or the character, it's not anywhere near the worst acting job in history.

So you haven't watched the show? He's not even in half the episodes

Again, I didn't really like the show. In the 22 page thread I was the first to complain about it. But it's hard to take you serious at this point. Does it have source material? Come on man.

I enjoyed the show and his character.

Who's book and experience is it based on? It feels more like a soap opera than anyone's real experience. And I have never been as distracted by a shitty actor as I am by Austin Butler in this show.
And thats not to say I hate AB, he has been good in everything I have seen him in before this. The more I think about it, the less likely I am to actually finish the show.

I liked it a lot, but I love anything WWII related

The source book is the same name. It's an excellent read.

There was a thread, the show wasn't very good.
I agree with this. I was quite disappointed. It was fine, but couldnt hold BoB’s, or even tPacific’s, jock. I also agree with OP regarding Butler’s performance. I’m not a fan.

A lot of it is based on Crosby's book. Crosby was the navigator that in the beginning fought air sickness then went on to become Group Navigator for the 100th. He was involved with just about everything that happened in the series as it pertains to the 100th through the end of that part of the war.
I thought it was a great series. 3rd best of the trilogy but still damn good. I couldn't believe how much shite they went through. If you had asked me what I thought was the safest jobs in the war, I would have picked Navy and then pilots/crew. In reality the pilots/crew was the most deadly and most left up to random luck.
I watched it live as it aired. Just spent the weekend with my mom who is a big WW2 fan and recently watched BOB and The Pacific (I gave her my Max password). So I took my AppleTV box and we binged Masters in a couple of days. We also watched Greyhound (pretty good WW2 movie on Apple) along with The Longest Day (first time for me, 100th for her) and some other documentaries on WW2. Very enjoyable weekend! Watched a few more WW2 docs when I got home.

I searched and didn't find anything but wanted to know if I am the only one that thinks Austin Butler is awful in this show? I am 2 episodes in and actively cheer for his plane to get shot down. Just awful acting. He is playing a caricature of a WW2 Pilot complete with the cheesiest, most predictable lines.
I complained about him many times in the discussion thread. He was terrible in this.
But the show is actually pretty good IMO, and the last few episodes really pick up a bit.

I've only watched clips of it here and there. No appletv. But there was an awesome old elder I grew up with that I was thinking of during the parts I saw. Do you remember/know Shay from my hometown congregation? Ask him about his grandfather next time you see him. He was an amazing man that I spent hours listening to.
It's been 30 years since I heard him talk about it, but some highlights for yall that might enjoy. He was a waist and tail gunner.
His plane was shot down a couple of times, and he had to get across the Channel from occupied France.
A bullet went through the fuselage one time he was in the tail and cut the hose on his oxygen mask.
He learned the all-important skill of peeing in any position from being crammed in the back of those planes.
He was threatened with court martial for refusing to fly after receiving news his father had passed away right before a mission. That mission ended up being the day 60 planes were lost, including the one he would have been on. The charges were either dropped or never filed.
The amazement he felt at how fast the German jet fighter was the first time he saw one. He watched it for several seconds and then remembered, "oh yeah, I gotta shoot at this thing"
He met his wife after the war while he was hitchhiking a ride home in uniform, iirc.
He stayed in and did mapping missions all over the world, and retired from the USAF.
He died from cancer in either the late 90's or early 2000's.
