I've seen stuff like this said a lot on this board. Why do so many people here hate blockbuster. I'm young, and my parents always handled the blockbuster and video rentals for most of my life, so I don't quite understand the hate

Well I can't speak for anyone else, although everything posted thus far pretty much sums up why Blockbuster sucks arse. My worst experience with them, and the reason I have never been back, happened like 5 or 6 years ago. I returned a movie, on time, in the drop box. I went back about a month later to rent a movie and when I went to pay they notified me of a $50 late fee. I told them that I returned the movie on time, and they told me that they had only gotten it back like a week beforehand. It had obviously gotten stuck in the drop box or just overlooked or something. I refused to pay it, put my movie back on the shelf, and haven't been back since.

Blockbuster needs to just die.

I have hated them for a long time, and will gladly piss on the grave when the company goes under.

In 2004-2005, my sophomore year at LSU, I pretty much bankrupted the location with the "2 Out at a Time" with Unlimited In-Store Exchanges.

I lived on campus and would just walk to Blockbuster and swap out movies. Me and some friends got addicted to quite a few TV series and we just murdered the place.

I remember the one guy who worked there told me one time, "We're losing money between you and those Indian folks on State Street".

I still like to wander into the video store from time to time. I hope they don't go away, completely.

I also like the Blockbuster kiosks. They are closer to our house than the red box kiosks.

what he said.

in BB's "heyday" you would rent a movie for approx. 36 hours* for let's say $4.99. For each "day" (not real days - think parking lot "days") it was an extra $4.99. That's a 100% late fee for a fraction of the rental time - EVERY DAY YOU'RE LATE. Does that sound like a good model to instill trust and loyalty in your customer base?

*36 hours because they had a fricked up rental period where no matter what time you rented it, it was due back before noon on rental day + 2. They even had a chart on the door so you knew when that piece of crap you rented was due.

We tried a couple times to get an in store swap. We knew we didn't have it on our plan, but we'd go in there and this was the dialogue:
BB Guy: "Want a free swap?"
Me: "We don't have that on our plan, just dropping it off."
BB Guy: "It doesn't matter, we can swap it."
Me: "Umm, ok."
Spent 15 minutes wandering around the store picking something out. Walk up to the counter.
BB Guy: "Oh, it looks like you don't have any free swaps."

I have been looking for somewhere to buy It's a Wonderful Life (the only holiday classic we watch that we don't own...except A Christmas Story--24hours on TBS!). All copies I could find were 24.99 or up. I thought that was a bit too high. I instead called BB. They had a copy for rent for 1.99. They told me to pay for it if I wanted to keep it. 11.99!!! It was a perfect DVD. NO scratches.

Thank you, BB!

Blockbusters failure will be due to the lack of looking ahead, instead choosing to play catch up. Redbox already had a sizable chunk of that market and netflix the mailing market. What they should have done was go straight after the streaming as thats the wave of the future and beat netflix to the punch, or at least be right there with them for the explosion.

So with you owing BB $50 (even though you were in the right), how does that work since you just left and cut ties with them? Do they try to send you notices or call or anything? Or did they basically just give up and say F it. It seems like with a late fee that large they wouldn't let you "get away with it" that easy.

I'd imagine they wouldn't want to push the situation by calling anyone a liar. There's no real way they can prove their side. I once had the same situation, but they said I still hadn't returned it. I said, "you're mistaken, I'm positive I returned it." So they just forgot about. Funnily enough, I found the movie in question under my bed like 6 years later.

I can agree with most of the negative blockbuster things in the article and thread except the quoted text. Redbox and Netflix aren't exactly helping mom & pop places either.

A couple years ago I rented a wiu game and returned it. They called me and claimed that the case that I gave them was empty, which was bs. I told them the timescale that I dropped them off and asked what controls they had in place to sure the drop off box rentals are restocked properly and nothing is stolen. He didn't have much of an answer so I told him unless he can prove that my disc was empty when I dropped it off, then it is not my problem. I never heard back after that and wasn't charged. Hah

Back when BB started their online service, you used to be able to google coupon codes for a free month of service of 3 out at a time and in store movie swaps. I would sign up and cancel at the end of the month, then sign up under a new email address and repeat. I did this 3 times and I watched all of Lost and other series doing this, haha.
