Without spoilers do the books basically follow new adventures of Murderbot or is his original crew still involved?
I've only read the first two (and currently reading the third), but it's basically the new adventures of Murderbot in the stuff I've read.
ETA:
So after reading novelettes 3 and 4 and starting 5, books 2 and 3 are basically new adventures of Murderbot, and books 4 and 5 deal with the original crew again. So I guess it's a mixture of both.
Hopefully they combine books 2 and 3 like the show runner has said he was considering in order to make longer episodes.

I've never read the books. The show is really good though.
Same! Happy to hear they are getting renewed for a 2nd season.

Now I’m not sure why, other than to show case Skarsgård, the Corporation would make a *full human face featured android, but then cover it up with a helmet… do they all look like him by model, individuals, or is each one unique?
Next ep explains it, though the reason is kinda weak. Guess to avoid an “iRobot“ scenario.

I can’t listen to the ensign from “Sanctuary Moon“ and not hear Fix it Felix.

I like the show but I could do with less of Sanctuary Moon.

At the rate they’re killing off sanctuary moon characters, that shouldn’t be a problem
* Finished S1. Good way to end it.
Will circle back to the space hippies? Or move on to a whole new chapter?

Listened to All Systems Red audible before I started the show. Pretty book accurate so far through 5 episodes (which is maybe an 45 minutes run time of show).
Actually like show Murderbot better than book version. Not so much with the crew. Not sure why they are making the crew out to be such buffoons when the reason Murderbot liked this crew in particular was because they weren't buffoons like the rest of humans.
But a very fun show. Really enjoying it.

Started watching and it’s got a pretty good cast. Despite the over the top diversity hippie science group, where “almost“ every damn box is checked,
Came into this thread knowing you were going to be complaining about this. Blame the book, not the show. It was a very diverse crew. Unlike Foundation, that changed for the sake of being diverse. But as long as you haven't read the source it doesn't bother you.

I think part of it is due to the condensing of characters and combining a couple characters personalities into 1 (which makes sense). They combined Pin and Arada's wife into one character, and kinda spread Volescu out between Arada, Ratthi, and Bharadwaj.
Overall I think they nailed Mensah and Gurathin, and did a pretty good job with Ratthi, (though they obviously ramped up his goofiness a bit for comedic effect, I think they got the essence of the character pretty well).
After reading farther in the series, I really hope we get a third and fourth season. Books 2 and 3 are solid like book 1, but books 4 and 5 are excellent and I'd love to see them filmed.

Yeah, if anything they scaled back that aspect in the show, leaving out a character that was part of a 4 person marriage with a bunch of kids.

You know me. You really know me!
At least I’m consistent. But my biggest issue is most of that group so often acted like idiots. I hated how the throuple acted, especially the guy who was such a complete Beta. The Asian chick actually was the coolest one of them all. So I guess I didn’t hate all of them. The two older ladies, the leader, and the one who got chomped on by the giant centipede, weren’t too bad. I really liked how they brought David Dastmalchian’s character around, dude to so damn versatile.

Then explain how it worked so well in The Expanse? Jim Holden had two mothers, maybe three and probably four dads. That wasn’t a problem.
The characters were better developed & also better written.

Yea there isn't enough time in these episodes to get to know any more characters. Even in the book you don't really get to know any characters outside of SecU well. I'm sure it'll get better as the books go along.

I was going to say I thought Ratthi's is too goofy, and I do still think that, but when he shot the gun and it kicked back and hit him in the head I LOL'd big time. Me and the Mrs. cracked up at that. It's goofy, but pretty well done.

I personally like the 15-20 minute episodes. I think most complaining about the length of the episodes don't realize how short the books are. If they were longer they'd have to be adding filler/no telling what that would be different from the book.

It's not a problem in Murderbot either, it's barely mentioned other than factually and having the characters interact. Mensah is part of polyamory relationship and it's barely mentioned outside of her talking about them with MB here or there.
And no shite characters will be better developed in a 600 page book versus a novella. The first 4 Murderbot novellas combined are barely more pages that the first expanse novel. They aren't remotely similar types of stories. The Expanse novels are about multiple characters, it's not just the Holden show. Whereas the Murderbot stories are primarily just about him (though the side characters get much better development in books 4 and 5).

The show runner was talking about doing multiple books for next season, which I think would be a good call, at least for 2 and 3.
If you are binge watching the entire show at once the short episodes wouldn't be a big deal, but when you are watching weekly the short runtime is a hindrance.

You’re just mad you’ve got nothing of substance to criticize me for and this is a prime example.

Key difference is that the committed versions were more earnest & not just trying it out for funzies , married vs not just some fling.
And with 7 seasons of the Expanse, I’d bet as a % of the story, we saw more throuple stuff in Murderbot’s 1 season
