For those that wanted a list of the music, Atlantic Records posted all of it on Youtube:

Flawed pilot in many ways

Won't argue that it could have been better. The whole story with the radio station owner was a bit weird and there were a lot of songs played (maybe it just felt like a lot because it was a 2 hour pilot?)...but, like you, it has me interested.

The depiction of Peter Grant was off. He was a huge man, not the smaller stature of the one they used. He was well over 6 foot tall and at least 350 lbs. That was part of what made him so intimidating.

We had a problem with our DVR copy of the Pilot - it started in the middle of the first board meeting with the Krauts. I got about 20 minutes into the pilot before the weekend, so we just caught up last night, all at once.

I agree with the stature concern, but the actor captured the "spirit" of Grant, the violent edge, the profanity, etc. I like most of the casting choices so far.

At this point, I like the vibe. I believe my initial assessment was correct - this is meant to be a period piece, adding a fairly heavy dose of social commentary to contemporary events, more or less the Mad Men (a show I liked a lot, but have never finished) model, but based on the 1970s music industry, specifically AOR. We've already seen them discuss:

-How black artists were fricked over in rock and roll

-Watergate

-Drugs being intertwined the music industry back then

-Women being second-class citizens (Jamie Vine is clearly Peggy from Mad Men for this show)

-Woodstock and the "hippies" starting to grow up

-Rejection of capitalism (rejecting the German Polygram offer)

And the first 3 hours, despite being filled with LOTS of period music, also covers a fairly broad range of visual images - from the look of Zeppelin, the seediness of NYC at that time, Andy Warhol, the technology of the time (tape recorders and televisions seem to be a focus) - very solid in establishing the period and introducing some artistic aspects to the shots. Of course Marty directed the pilot and that set the tone.

It carried a heavy "Goodfellas" vibe, from the casting of Bo Dietl to the "body in the trunk" scene. That's a good thing, though, IMHO.

The lack of bump on this leads me to believe most folks thought E2 sucked as much as I did.

Wow that was not good.

This show is what Mad Men wouldve been If it were written by the same people that made Entourage

Yep, that was a disappointment.

All new shows go through this. Take The Leftovers for example - a lot of folks were amped or at least intrigued after the pilot. Then the second episode was kind of, "WTF?" Then, by the 3rd episode it all started to click.

I'm willing to give it a second chance. I did not have a problem with E2 - there still has to be a good bit of establishing - we've only scratched the surface with anyone other than Ritchie. He's the Knucky Thompson of this universe - we'll see more of the (extremely well cast, IMHO) other characters' development in the upcoming episodes.

Thus far, it is par for my initially high expectations.

Well, it's clearly Boardwalk Empire meets Mad Men meets Goodfellas - at this point. I'm interested to see which way it leans over time.

It wasn't all that bad. I'm still digging the music.

I kinda tripped out when they played Venus In Furs. Just last week I watched Gus Van Zandt's Last Days and that song featured prominently in it too. Small world.

I enjoyed the second round. Him ripping into his team was great. By the way did anyone pick up on dropped the Aerosmith bootleg off comment on the first ep?

Out of the three, I would say Mad Men. Richie isn't a gangster -- he was pretty distraught over his involvement in the murder of Buck Rogers.

I'm not writing this show off yet. E2 showed some needed background of the characters and there have been some great lines through these two episodes.

Mad men was much more subtle than this has been and was better for it

The scene where he randomly talks about watergate on TV just to remind everyone that it's the 70s was pretty bad.

Maybe over time they were able to go subtle, but the early episodes - really through the first couple of seasons kind of hit us over the head, "THE 60S ARE GOING TO BE DIFFERENT!" No shite. Obviously, Vinyl isn't there yet and may never get there. I'm in favor of giving it a little more time.

Mad Men was one of the most nuanced shows in history. It lived for not hitting you over the head with outlandish scenarios.

Thus far Ritchie has killed a man, rejected a deal that would have made him rich, survived a building collapse, and shot the shite with Andy Warhol and Robert Plant.

I love music in shows and movies, but they tricked me into the show was ending about 8 times with their use of music. It kicks into Bad Moon Rising after he walks out of his staff meeting, stays loud throughout a 30 second scene then dies as soon as the other party walked out of Ritchie's office. Its far from clever.

This show could learn a shite load from Mad Men.

Fair enough, but if you're familiar with Winter's shtick - this is kind of it - mixing the fiction with nonfiction - and it isn't all that outlandish for a high end music producer to encounter such acts and, lest we forget, Phil Specter is in prison for murder? The building collapse itself is an over-the-top metaphor. (FWIW - the Mercer Arts Center was a real place, the NY Dolls really performed there during 1973 and the building really collapsed, although not during a Dolls show. It was part of a "welfare" hotel, and 4 residents died. But the collapse occurred not long before the theater was scheduled to be full of people, so a tragedy as depicted in the show was narrowly avoided in real life.)

Is that all that different from Don Draper literally living a lie with a stolen identity (sorry if spoilerish)? This secret family he pays for? I mean, this is how literary storytelling is done.

Fair enough - I think this is Marty's way of keeping the viewer off balance. It is about a coke fueled, half crazed music producer.

I'm not crowning it as GOAT yet, FWIW.

I thought it was a solid second episode. The show is obviously still building. Give it time and watch the stories develop.

Here, for sure - on the show notsomuch

I'm not sold one way or the other yet, but laughed when he walked in the board room gacked-up and smashed the Tull record.

I was a definite relief not having to hear that shite anymore. He did what I imagine all of us watching wanted to do.

I'm liking the show. It's solid entertainment and I just don't feel like nitpicking it.
