Go watch Taxi Driver. Same thing, made better.

It certainly pays homage to King of Comedy and Taxi Driver but the former was based on Robert Klein's early career and the latter was based on the diaries of the guy that shot Gov. Wallace and a Harry Chapin song. Everything is influenced by what came before it and Joker did a great job of taking inspiration from two great movies and doing something new in the superhero genre. Inception is based on the 007 movies, Robocop by Blade Runner, The Shape of Water from Creature From the Black Lagoon, Matrix from Ghost in the Shell, etc.

I think it'll be like a star is born, not a full musical like Chicago.

This would be great. The music is a production they are putting on, not using music as a dialogue to advance the movie. That is a major difference. I wouldn't call A Star is Born a musical. So if this is the route they take, then it's not really a musical in my mind. Hopefully it's them singing to an audience in the movie, not breaking the 4th wall and singing to us, the viewer.

They have the advantage of building on a previous film where the viewer could see the imaginary performances and imaginary life that The Joker was seeing in his mind. Since the premise of this movie is a shared insanity, I wouldn't doubt that the musical numbers will be their delusions on display for the film audience.

In.

Mostly because Joker was an unexpected surprise.

The musical stuff doesn’t bother me nearly as much as it does some people. I think in context with him being crazy it’s a very workable idea.

Joker: Folie À Deux Is A ‘Dangerous’ Music-Driven Sequel: ‘The Inmates Are Running The Asylum’

The resulting wild brew made the prospect of a second film compelling to its leading man. “It’s the only way that I can do any movie,” Phoenix tells Empire in our world-exclusive Joker: Folie À Deux cover story. “If it doesn’t feel like it’s dangerous, if there’s not a good chance that you’re gonna fail spectacularly then... what’s the point?” His director concurs. “That was literally the reason to do it,” says Phillips. “The only reason Joaquin would even do a sequel is if it felt frightening to him. One thing he really got off on on the first movie was this fear, every day, this nauseous fear of like, ‘What are we fricking doing?’ He did not want it to be easy. And he wanted to feel as scared on this one. He goes, ‘Well, if I’m gonna do it, I just want to feel that it could not work.”
