This movie popped up on my recommended list on Prime.

quote:

FBI agent Thomas Mackelway (Aaron Eckhart) is transferred to Albuquerque, N.M., after he mishandles the arrest of a serial killer (Keith Campbell). There he is called to investigate the gruesome murder of a salesman (Kevin Chamberlin), who turns out to be a serial killer himself. After two more killings, Thomas and his partner (Carrie-Anne Moss) conclude that Benjamin O'Ryan (Ben Kingsley), a former FBI agent with psychic abilities, is responsible for the deaths.

The cast is pretty legit.

Eckhart, Moss, and Kingsley are great actors. With that cast and the general plot of serial killers with a possible psychic angle should be at least a decent movie.

The issue lies here:

Director: E. Elias Merhige

My god the filmography is just awful and the script is awkward.

The writer is Zak Penn, who has a pretty decent resume, including The Incredible Hulk, X-men 2, Avengers, and he also co-created the underrated Scyfy show Alphas.

Outside of the director, this could have been a winner.

There are “psychic vision” scenes that are headache inducing.

18% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Anyone else have the pleasure of experiencing this?

I was excited for a second because I thought this thread was about Zero Effect a very underrated Ben Stiller and Bill Pullman mystery.

Actually saw it in a theater. It’s definitely worth a watch. Twists and turns.

There are positive aspects. The cast really is fantastic.

There were simply some awful film style choices.

It could have been so much better.

I remember being excited when this movie first came out. Man it was a shite sandwich.

Fast forward many years later and I see this movie on Prime or Netflix and seeing who starred in it, I thought it looked good until my brain said "hold the frick up, remember!" The cast and synopsis makes it look say tantalizing

I wouldn’t call it deep.

The plot isn’t overly complicated.

Its failure is the photography primarily.

It went too ham-handed with its “vision” scenes and, IMO, it simply looked cheap.

The story also glossed over important aspects and relationships.

For example, Eckhart and Moss’s love connection.

It goes from “we didn’t work” to Eckhert stating “I love you” out of no where, even after she failed to have his back with the FBI director.

Just shoddy and left much to be desired.

I’d have to think back on it. I liked Ghandi as the villain. Very creepy.
Kingsley does evil convincingly.

Watch it again. Let me know your thoughts since it’s been 20 years.

It has such great potential, but fails hard on some major aspects.

That he does which is why the movie fell flat. It didn't match what he brought if that makes sense.

I found it to be a pretty naked rip-off of Se7en. I also disliked the visual choices, though i wasnt surprised to see them attempted, given the director previously made Shadow of the Vampire and Begotten. I found Eckhart to be especially bad in this.
