SO agree with the casting of Ari Gold. Now whenever I see Jeremy Piven in anything else, all I can think of is Ari.
This is what I was going for...If you see Daniel Radcliffe in a new role as a firefighter all you're going to think is "Damn, Harry Potter is in a firefighter movie."
Red Fox was a nice one...

This has not received enough votes. I don't think he even had to "act" in this role. Mainly in Rocky 1 and 2. In 3,4, and 5 he was too glamorous. In Rocky 1 and 2 he was just a hard nosed, unintelligent punching bag.

I think that's because the real life events happening in Stallone's life at the time mirror Rocky's story very closely.
ETA: Being dirt broke, writing the script (on Balboa Blvd) with him as the main actor only to be turned downed repeatedly because no one believed he was good enough to carry a movie.

Best pic I could find of Ernest Borgnine as Vince Lombardi.

Good point. I mean it's a good thread idea, but it's gone WAY out of hand.
Iconic CHARACTER =/= Actor born to play the role
Now you can argue can you have one without the other, but I don't know.
Scully and Mulder. Nobody but Duchovny and Anderson could be them. Nobody. Of course, this opinion is totally subjective, like yours was. It's still a fun thread.

Iconic CHARACTER =/= Actor born to play the role
Now you can argue can you have one without the other, but I don't know.
Take John Wayne for instance: You mean he was born to play the same role, with 4 different names in 4 different movies?? This makes no sense. It's more likely that they edited roles to fit his very narrow acting chops. (And I love westerns too, but let's not kid ourselves about John Wayne).
This list of 50 or so characters should really be 10. Maybe.
Arnold born to Terminator is ridiculous.
Arnold born to play Conan makes sense.
This in itself is an interesting discussion. It's really hard sometimes to distinguish between an iconic character in a movie that was a smash hit(where any number of actors could have played the role but now a specific actor is identified with it) and a role that a) the actor has specific physical/personality characteristics that are perfect OR b) where the actor takes the part and creates a memorable character with his own vision that we now identify as the only interpretation.
For example, I was very skeptical when Brando was announced for The Godfather. I had read the book and he just didn't fit my mental image of the character. However, he "re-created" the character for me in a sense, and now I can't think of any other actor doing that role.
In terms of characters that no other actor could play from the get go, that list is indeed short. At one time I thought no other actor could nail Bond as well as Connery, yet Daniel Craig probably comes closer to the character from the book.

Couldn't agree more.

How about this..
Jennifer Lopez playing Selena!
All her other movies are bad.. but she was perfect for this role.
