So I rewatched most of this movie for the first time in a long time a little while back. One take away that struck me that I didn't notice when I watched the movie when I was young was how much of a caricature the Jewish character is. He just shows up and is all, "Yeah, I'm Jewish, and I hate Nazis. Everyone knows that Nazis all hate Jews, so I'm their worst nightmare." And he has like this whole holy vendetta sort of thing going on. I just noticed how the whole thing seemed a little artificially played up.

People give Upham shite, but even Ryan, a paratrooper meant to represent the elite of the US Army, breaks down and loses his shite during that final battle.

I don't think he's turned into a caricature at all and he definitely doesn't act as if he's the German soldier's worst nightmare; he throws in some "Juden" lines, but that's about it. Hell, he breaks down crying after they open up Omaha beach and he's handed a Hitler Youth knife.

It's played up too much. It's made too much of a point that he is Jewish. When the German soldiers are marched by the road he makes a point to show them his star of David. Most times that he is given screen time is to remind the audience that he's Jewish. He is token Jewish guy there for no other reason to highlight that aspect of WWII though it doesn't really have any place in this particular movie.

Good Lord, an anti Jewish rant in the midst of a thread bout a great WWII movie. My uncle was in the Big Red One, which had "numerous " Jews in it & he said this sort of reaction happened all the time. That aside, I talked to an old timer, he was Patton's #2 driver but had landed on Normandy the first day with his unit. He said the only thing missing from the reality of the filming was the smell of battle, which of course is not possible to portray on film. All that cordite in the air, the smell of men losing control of their bowels, when soldiers were gut shot & their intestines spilled out, the smells were incredible. He said the "ping ping ping" of flying bullets was 100% realistic & he found himself ducking instinctively all during the shooting of the landing scenes.

Yeah to think a Jewish soldier wasn't proud during WWII and didn't rub it in a Nazis face at any given chance is absurd.

If you think that's an anti Jewish rant then you are a fricking moron. Sincerely, frick you for not being able to see a legitimate criticism and instead accusing me of anti-semiticism.

Liebgott in Band of Brothers. Now there was a depiction of a man who happened to be Jewish, not someone who was there just to be "The Jew." But of course you are too dull to see the difference.

The only difference you're able to cite is when he holds out his Star of David and says, "Juden" a few times to passing Wehrmacht soldiers. That's all you have. Of course, if you feel as though you have further arguments I'd love to hear them.
