Can't tell if you're being serious.

My wife and I just finished this
I gave it a B minus. It was a good rainy day Sunday flick but how in the hell are some people saying this is the best picture of the year?
People are acting like it’s Shawshank or Goodfellas. And everyone says it’s such a powerful message. What am I missing? White man bad??

100%
The overly farcical violent scenes in both movies hurt the end product.
It came off as if he couldn't write a proper ending.
The best parts of IB don't involve the Basterds, generally. The parts that are ok work because of Landa/Waltz. He powers the energy in those scenes.
It was better in Hollywood because the cult had 2 great scenes (car drive and check in).

Some of my favorite reviews:
quote:
Sinners suggests that music allows us to experience a form of "time travel," connecting with the past through the voices of ancestors, understanding the present through shared emotions, and glimpsing potential futures through the evolving sounds and styles it inspires.
quote:
The way this film incorporates music—conceptually, historically, narratively— into every single aspect of its creation, and makes it feel like the greatest and oldest power in humanity’s arsenal against subjugation, is truly monumental.
quote:
A (rock) operatic, IMAX-sized tale about the intersection of faith, community, heritage, exploitation, and freedom. Coogler celebrates artists across every medium as tethers to cultural identity.
How much you enjoy this film will be dependent on your appreciation for music as an art form. It also shows how culturally layered and rich the south is.
If your takeaway was, “white man bad” that’s genuinely pitiful — and I settled on that word carefully. And if you did enjoy any of the music featured, the Irish folk music included, understand this film is making fun of you.
It’s not a drama & no one would compare this to Shawshank. It’s way more on the entertainment / celebration of art side, but it manages to simultaneously have a lot of substance.
It’s as much a film about the power, history, and evolution of music as it is a film about American history & culture in general.

I'm pretty sure Inglorious Basterds is my favorite movie of all time. I cannot find a flaw. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a great movie as well.
I agree. Still, I find those parts to be amazing as well.
Tarantino is my Bizarro Shakespeare.

I have read a lot of bad takes from you in the past and this takes the cake.
The display of violence at the end of the movie makes the movie.
There is lurking tension for the entirety of every of every QT movie and without the violence it’s just an over the pants handjob.

It was a good not great movie. I guarantee you it will be nominated for best picture.

Thankfully the Oscars are a joke now and nobody cares.

I’m gonna go out on a limb & say more people care about the Oscars than two butthurt old men crying on TD’s movie board.

And you’d fall off that limb on the basis of your own logic.

Your opinion carries more weight than the oscars, because I post on the same board as you & 100 other people.
A regular Aristotle here.

People like you often have no self awareness so I’m not surprised you didn’t get it.

Why don’t you understand context?

The context is that the KKK being the bad guys in a reconstruction era film hurt his feelings. Fairly obvious.
Did you also miss the detailed response that directly answered his question asking what the powerful message was supposed to be? The one about music being more than entertainment?
Everyone doesn’t have to be in love with the movie. Art and entertainment are subjective. But anyone who has seen the film can easily infer quite a few things about the critic, if the criticism is “white man bad”.
If he’d stopped at the second paragraph, he would’ve sounded like a normal person.

Edit: I see some dv's. So you folks liked the the scene with future of music being intertwined? I liked the connection to the past, but it was strange to try to connect it to the future.
All American music evolved from roots music. Cultures rub elbows & influence each other, and this is often reflected in art.
Native American music influenced early African American music… field songs into blues and gospel into rock & roll, acid rock, jazz, and on and on.
It’s one of the main themes of the film. Music being a gateway to other times and places. The film’s intro narration is pretty heavy handed about this.
The scene is visually striking and tells a story without words. The overlaying and blending of genres was extremely well done. So I think, probably, most people liked it. One my the favorite scenes of the film right next to Rocky Road to Dublin & Buddy Guy.

Yea, watching gangsters crip walk to demonic music designed to destroy them is such an important extension of cultural roots.
