It's weird. Usually in these types of shows, the documentary portion usually leaves me liking the interview subject more, even if I don't care for their work. In this case, I really disliked Bowen Yang, and I normally find him solid if not my cup of tea.

The gay Asian dude overreacting to his audition tape that was like 4 years ago also annoyed me
He is the Leslie Jones of this cast. He’s only there so they can check a box. He’s sometimes tolerable, but usually terrible in most sketches.

The writers episode was good in that it was interesting to see how it all plays out and how insane it is but holy shite that writing cast they have now is hilarious and sad outside of the please don’t destroy guys. It seems like it’s just a giant Reddit woke forum in an echo chamber. And some of those auditions were awful in the first episode. Passing on Jim Carrey is wild. Wayans bringing homey the clown, men on film and them not using that is crazy too. Want to re watch seasons 10-12 now
honestly came away from that documentary thinking getting on SNL isn’t the elite of elite of comedy like I thought it was. (Definitely obvious over the last 10 plus years at least)

Yeah I was going to say it seems like a group that tweets all day raging about Trump but that works too

I think part of the problem historically has been when the writer’s room was weak regardless of the cast involved.
You can have great cast members and a shite show if your writers can’t hack it.
Case in point, SNL circa 1994-1995 still had Sandler, Farley, Spade, Norm MacDonald, Tim Meadows, Jay Mohr, and others but was a horribly unfunny season due to poor writing decisions. One of them was having an entire sketch built around Chris Elliot getting the underage babysitter drunk on Zima and molesting her for God’s sake.
There was also building an entire sketch around Patrick Stewart having a “sexy cake” shop where he would only make cakes of people going to the bathroom.
Not so coincidentally, IMHO, a number of writers from that staff transitioned over to The Simpsons and helped bring the quality of the show down around seasons 8-10 a few years later.

I think they've been funny in the cold opens and main skits since trump won. They've definitely eaten some crow and poked fun of themselves on multiple occasions
