quote:

Suicide Squad is a weird movie, and not just because it’s about a motley crew of supervillains set in the DC universe. The movie itself is also a motley amalgamation—a strange blend of different tones, stories ,and pacing all mashed into something that has cool individual elements, but never really comes together.

quote:

Unfortunately, once the assembled team begins their mission, that’s where Suicide Squad starts to go off the rails. The goal of the Squad’s mission is incredibly ambiguous, gets even murkier as the narrative unfolds, and then falls apart once all is revealed at the end. Plus, the at least partially cohesive tone of the first act of the film segues into a second act that’s radically different in tone, and more of a war movie than anything else. Characters spend a good 20-30 minutes walking around just getting into gun fights. If Suicide Squad were merely an action movie, this would be exciting, but these characters are villains, some of whom have superpowers. Merely seeing them shoot guns at things isn’t that exciting.

Mr Sunday Movies liked it though he said there were a couple things off with the third act. Jared Leto was a fine Joker, but he wasn't in it enough. He says it's certainly the best DCU movie so far

Matt Singer's review is a must read. I mean, he f'n hated the film, but he does a really great job of savaging it (bad reviews are almost always more fun to read). He spares no one, as he gleefully tears into every misconceived idea.

Man, those people with the hate definitely wanted to get it out early. I think it's going to be a fun movie but this one again will probably fail with critics. At least it sounds like I'll have fun with this one. The DC fans who care about critics will just have to look to Wonder Woman, because it looks like this one's toast. I'm to the point where I really just don't care anymore. There's only so much critical failure you can take before you just kind of get immune to it. I think DC is there.

I've known him since he had a film message board back in 2002. He'd get pissed because we'd discuss movies on the adjoining comics board but wouldn't go over to talk about them on his forum.

33% ??!! Damn, not looking good.. I think I'll wait and see what Jeremy Jahns or Chris Stuckman have to say. I pretty much trust their opinions over RT.

The consensus seems to be that one of the main problems is it's held back by the PG-13 raiting. Did WB learn nothing from Deadpool? Also if this movie sucks then I'm done with the DCU. If Justice League or WW get good reviews I'll go see it, but I'm not going opening weekend or getting hyped

Comingsoon.net gave it a 8.5/10. Damn. They hated BvS, too. I think this one might actually climb a little bit. The reviews do seem to be all over the place even more so than BvS. Interesting.

Much like MoS and BvS...I WAAAAAAAANT to like this movie so damn bad!!!!

No idea if I will end up liking it, but I think it's simply not true that some of us that have had issues with the first two installments of the DCEU have some Marvelite agenda going on. shite...I grew up on Super Friends on Saturday Mornings! I want nothing more than for these to be spectacular.

If anything, I'm going in giving them the benefit of the doubt and when I'm pissed it's because I've felt they've let me, as a lifelong fan, down.

I'll be seeing it with my son's birthday party group the second Saturday after it comes out...can't wait. Hoping it's awesome.

SS was a much bigger budget than Deadpool. So of course they wouldn't have the freedom to make it R. Guess we will have to wait for yet another improved director's cut instead of getting to see it in theaters

consensus seems to be better than bvs but worse than man of steel.

Directors taking crestive freedom has been the problem, now studio intervention is a problem.

While Batman and Superman have successfully been translated to film. I thinks it's time to admit that the DC universe simply isn't built for film.

or you notice a big drop off when a guy like chris nolan isn't directing.

marvel has feige who seems to be a master at guiding their universe. not sure if geoff johns can be that guy for dc yet.

Wait. I thought that it was a BAD thing when the studios copied Deadpool. When did the general consensus switch on this?
