I always love white collar/financial themed movies. I like the cast but I am hesitant to see it because I worry about the anti corporate, "big corporation is bad" attitude on movies like this. Anyone who has already seen it get this feeling from it??

They put a face on all of the frauds and idiots. It's not "Banks are bad", it's "Look at the idiots that were running things into the ground."

Most of the "heroes" of the story are in the financial sector as well. If there is a moral it's not anti-corporate or anti-capitalism, it's that you can't just give companies complete autonomy with no oversight and regulation bc they'll run amok. Capitalism is not anarchy. When there are absolutely no rules, or rules aren't followed, bad things usually happen

The ending was kind of strange IMO. Some of cameos were random

It really doesn't have an agenda, besides that fraud and greed are bad.
I can't stand preachy liberal movies and I didn't get a hint of that at all in this.
I thought it was a pretty creative movie as far as the story telling. I was worried how they would explain a very dense and boring(for some) subject, but they did a great job I think. I'd like to hear from more people who had no idea what happened and get their response on the story telling.
Steve Carell was fantastic in the movie and I think he stole the show. Ryan Gosling was basically playing the same smug, well dressed, a-hole he always plays, he did it well, but it was no stretch.

Great movie. I really enjoyed it

It's better than The Wolf of Wall Street in every way IMO.
Including directing.

I really enjoyed the movie. They really dumbed down the financial stuff, almost to a point of being annoying to me since I already knew about all that stuff, but they at least did it in an entertaining way.
SPOILER
I really loved how Brad Pitt punches the audience in the gut to remind us that we shouldn't all be celebrating with the guys as they make their fortune since it meant so much suffering

They didn't dumb it down that much. Just enough for general [intelligent] audiences to understand it.

I enjoyed it, but it will be a hard sell to your average movie-goer. Attendance was pretty light at the mid-day show I went to yesterday.
Planet Money did some informative podcasts about the bubble, subprimes, etc. The most known one is "The Giant Pool of Money" that ran on This American Life. Well worth a listen. They do a good job of making it understandable.

We just got back and enjoyed it! I didn't recognize Ryan Gosling!

How does it compare to Inside Job?

Thanks for the recommendation. Really enjoyed the movie. I don't know what's crazier, that there were no regulations, or that only one person went to jail when it was all over.

Awesome movie, I had read the book and was skeptical they could capture it in a two-hour flick but hell of a job. Best acting job I've seen by Steve Carrell.
For everyone afraid to see it because it might poke some holes in your beloved capitalist beliefs, quit being pussies and go enjoy a good movie.

Great movie and it wasn't at all a bunch of Occupy Wall Street propaganda. I may be wrong but I don't even remember hearing the name "Bush" the entire film. Someone may correct me on that.
No one should hold off on seeing this movie because they think it's going to be a preachy, political hack piece. It isn't AT ALL.

I don't know if I'm alone, but I really thought this movie effectively broke the fourth wall.

This movie was tremendous. I wasn't cognizant of what was happening at the time of the recession, I only saw the effects of it. This was definitely a cool little explanation of what was happening.
It was VERY well acted, and yes, Steve Carrell absolutely stole the show. Towards the end his turmoil was palpable, but in a way that you knew it was inevitable. Don't sleep on Bale, either. Did a good job depicting the "otherness" of his role.
Agreed! I liked that in doing so it mirrored the characters bucking the normative practices of their times as well.
Just an all-around good film I'd recommend.

Thought the movie was a disjointed mess.
And way to tongue-in-cheek for the topic of which was an American disaster.
And why was it portraying these guys as heroes when all they were doing is trying to make a fast buck off of homeowners just like the banks.

Fair critique, but I didn't mind the style.

Sometimes humor is exactly what's needed to make something especially weighty a little easier to swallow.

I don't think it's fair to generalize about all of the characters in such a way when they were all possessed of differing motivations. They were all on a spectrum, and if you only saw them as one-dimensional characters I don't think you were comprehending what you were seeing.
