I'm actually really shocked to see no signs of a "strong woman" character.
There’s always Bertilak de Hautdesert’s wife or even Morgan le Fay.

In Roman Britain you had ethnic people

That being said, would England in the 400s/500s have anyone living there that wasn't pasty white? Especially a knight of the round table, and a relation to Arthur himself. I just don't see a Dev Patel type being what Gawain was imagined to be.
It has tree people, giants and a talking fox. I can extend my suspension of disbelief to a brown person.

Even if said-brown person is the nephew of the pasty-faced King Arthur (played by the pasty-faced Sean Harris)?

I remember reading it in high school. I went back and looked at the synopsis, and wonder how close the movie will stick to the poem.

It actually is quite hard to suspend biology and genetics, but whatever. I'm excited to see this movie because I loved the poem when I read it in college. I had an English Lit teacher who actually enjoyed his subject and made everything interesting. Dev Patel is just a random choice for Sir Gawain when you look at the rest of the cast around him.

How many talking foxes do you encounter in your life
