I watched it last night. It wasn't a horrible movie but it seemed like a sermon on the evils of pollution and global warming. I'd rather watch the Discovery channel for something like that and not a movie that I was hoping would be a good thriller.

You didn't get scared when they were being chased by the......WIND??
Also, am I the only one who thought it was poorly acted all around?

It was the trees releasing toxins into the air that made everyone who breathed it kill themselves, but not anyone else. It started with large populations and then attacked smaller and smaller groups until it finally attacked that one lady by herself who was outside. That's when the attack ended. No one believed that it could have been nature because it was only in the Northeast, so they said it was a terrorist attack (slight 9/11 reference). Then at the very end you see it start happening again in France.
Does that help?
I understand all of that. They make it clear that was the theory throughout the movie. My gripe is the movie sucked so bad, just show what exactly caused the mutated spores or whatever and end the freakin' movie. I realize that there were toxins being released from the plants. They tell you that flat out. But how? I just like to find those things out. What caused these toxins?
Unexplainable sciene my foot. It's a freakin' movie. What caused this "happening"? MNS sucks. I'm done with his movies.

I didn't think it was about that at all. I think it was more about the killing of all the trees to make way for large populations. Pollution doesn't kill plants, they feed off of it. (CO2 anyway) That's why they killed the old lady at the end. She loved plants and lived on hardly any land, but it still made a difference.
I didn't think the acting was that bad at all.

Not at all. Marky Mark was bad, but the chick with freaky eyes (Zooey whatever) turned it the worst acting performance I have ever seen. Period.

he had really gory, really bad suicides/deaths in this movie, and it was funny, not terrifying

SPOILERS
Okay I just watched it last night for the first time.
They gave you the cheesy story line right away so I was okay with that. I would have been more upset if you went watching the entire movie and in the last 5 minutes they go, "It is the trees." They let you know that almost immediately and if you missed that they threw enough hints with the classroom scene, not only what Wahlburg said, but the little phrase on the chalk board. Then of course the plant man who straight up says it could be the trees.
The acting was horrible in this movie as well. Not a good role for Wahlburg at all. The girl was not great either (Not going to try and spell her name). I think that took away from the movie even more.
Overall this was an improvement from his most recent movies. Lady In the Water and The Village are still his worst movies. The Sixth Sense and Signs are his better flicks, with a huge gap between The Sixth Sense and Signs.

SPOILERS....
I agree with most of the opinions on here as far as the plot of the movie, but did anyone else notice that "most" of the time when people were about to be infected, they were angry or fighting? The one group in the field was arguing over direction before the army guy started the suicides, and the biggest one was the old lady was very angry before she started. The two kids on the porch were getting angry also, but a human shot them and not the toxin. I was just wondering why Wahlburg, wife, and kids weren't infected when the wind rolled over them, I was thinking maybe because they weren't angry or fighting....who knows...

It's because it was over. I don't remember the first couple to die fighting, but that was at the very beginning.

It was definitely over. When they walked outside, it said it was 9:28 am, and a few minutes later when they showed the news clip, it said the whole thing stopped at 9:27 am.

I liked everything but the main plot. The subplots and good acting kept it interesting. Of course I was watching it at home, for free, while surfing during boring parts, so this isn't a great endorsement.

Spoilers
I thought this could have been so much better.
First off. It was ridiculous that they new it was a short term event. It was all over the news immediately that it was a toxin from trees and would be over fairly quickly. There was no way for them to no this. I know Shamalamadingdong was using the tv as exposition to move the story along, but it was really lame.
2nd! When the teens got blown away, instead of running away they all just hung out next to the bodies for way to long. Anyone else would have been running as fast as possible to get away from that house. In the script, the teens tried to burn a field of corn down and instead they were poisoned and burned themselves up.. That would have been better.
The end, when they all ran out into the open to meet each other was also so stupid. There was no reason for them to give up and do that. They were basically committing suicide. Lame!
Acting was not real good throughout.
This was his worst to date.
Made the Village and Lady in the Water look like Shakespeare.
Could have been better with tighter more realistic script.
There were other things that irked me but I don't remember them since I saw it when it came out.

I have to say that M. Night's work on the death scenes was incredible, and even when the old lady was attacking Wahlberg is was pretty suspensiveful. I was not scared by the wind at all, but wondering what gruesome way these people were going to find to kill themselves was wicked. The people jumping off the building was a fantastic scene.
The whole earth/plants attacking humans angle was just lame, and the attacking wasn't great. M. Night's movies are generally so slow paced that the acting has to be really, really good or it shows.
I would love to see M. Night do a traditional horror movie without his trademark weirdness in it. Like a Halloween or Friday the 13th type movie - but the orginals, not the campfests that came later. Just a crazed killer stalking and murdering his victims in terrible ways. I think that'd be scary as shite.

Was it just as good as The Village?? I actually liked that one.

Village had better actors. Most people just hated the ending of the Village.
Most people hated Lady in the Water, but I liked it. It was just a fairy tale story for kids.
I would put Happening way way at the bottom of Shamalamadingdongs movies. The only cool part are the crazy deaths and there weren't enough of them.

My problem with the Village is that I figured out the ending before the movie was even halfway over. And I'm not the kind of guy who tries to figure out twists or movie-endings and ruin it for everyone else. I just thought it was blatantly obvious, forced, and lame.

I thought Lady was really creative, very-well acted, and beautifully shot. It's second on my Shymalon list behind Sixth Sense and just ahead of Unbreakable and Signs.
The Happening is by far the worst he has done, and the only truly bad movie I think he has made. The Village was average, the rest have been pretty solid.

Like I said, I like to get caught up in the story of the movie. I don't really over-analyze it. I'd put LITW closer to the bottom of my list even though I enjoyed it, with the Village being near the top. The Happening wasn't his best, but it was good to see what he could do with a rated R flick.
