And....I'm not usually one to read war books, but I am considering reading the memoirs that the series was based on.

I have read the books "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge, "Helmet for My Pillow" by Robert Leckie and "The Pacific" by Hugh Ambrose and they are all great reads. Reading them beforehand really helped my appreciation for the miniseries since the books give you a lot more background information and a bigger picture on what was happening at the time. I read the companion book (The Pacific) while the series was going on and it made the series much more enjoyable.

It was hard it seems to tell 3 stories at once and it wasn't until Leckie's story kind of moved on that the stories of Sledge and Basilone got awesome. I think it was mediocre in ep. 1-6 and the rest was just plain incredible. Basilone is a goddamn American hero.

FWIW, I would have LOVED this series 20x more had they cast Sledge differently. I hate that Jurassic Park kid.

I thought that the Leicke and Sledge stories were pretty good and a coherent narrative could have maybe made out from them but that the Basilone story didn't fit in. I think his is a great story but I think it should have been maybe a stand alone movie or 2-3 part miniseries.

Found this on the HBO site - Pacific downloads - now I have me a great pic of Snafu charging into battle as my desktop background.

It was very good, I think I was just comparing it to the consistency of BOB too much. Just different circumstances; apples and oranges.

great series, not on the band of brothers level but it had me glued to the tv every sunday. You could definitely tell how much younger the marines were than the soldiers in the band of brother series

B+

Would have been a C- without the last 3-4 episodes. THAT was what I wanted to see. I think the showed that it was pieced together from several books.

HBO does war stories quite well. BoB is my favorite series ever. I thought the Pacific was fantastic. I also really enjoyed Generation Kill...thought it was pretty spot on from my other readings about our current war.

Had the opportunity to do a random act of kindness for a WWII veteran today. Was sitting in my car at Sonic waiting for some food when a truck pulled up beside me with an elderly couple. The guy is wearing a WWII Veteran hat, so I go over and buy their meal. He said he served in both the European and Pacific theatres, but I didn't bug him for details.
