Wow, what did I just watch? I witnessed an intriguing, Black Mirror-style film morph into a grotesque body horror, only to finally transform into a completely absurd B-movie. I'm literally dumbfounded. Has anyone else watched The Substance?

There is a short thread about it. I loved it. Even with the absurd body horror that I usually don’t handle well, I thought the most disgusting part was Quaid eating the shrimp at the beginning.

If you have a chance, check out A Different Man. Similar message about accepting yourself, but only a dabble of body horror.

thought it was the best movie of 2024 so far. Kubrick meets Cronenberg

Just the Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley nude scenes on Reddit.

Needed 20min shaved off the runtime and it would've been far more impactful with a better ending. Ventured a little too far into the surrealist/absurdist waters

I thought it was pretty great.

Obviously very Cronenberg, but honestly the movie it reminded me of the most was Society (1992)

The ending is nuts

Brian Yuzna is the best. If you liked Society, check out Return of the Living Dead 3. Even with a low budget, the guy can turn out some amazing practical effects.

I haven't watched it yet but I plan on it. I gather is basically an updated take on Death Becomes Her but without the comedic element.

I thought so as well. At some point it gets repetitive kinda loses steam.

Agreed but that's the french filmmaking style. French movies always have really long runtimes.

I liked it OK but didn't care for the last 15-20 minutes. Quaid was great.

Yep. Long and excessive, both in runtime and content

I wish that she would've gone back just to see that they had replaced her with another girl and carried on like nothing happened. Then instead of the gore porn freak show ending, it's somber and depressing as she reflects on the fact that she did all this shite and put herself through hell for nothing. Then she goes out, dissolves on the star, etc.

More predictable I suppose, but would've hit like a sledgehammer IMO

You came up with an ending that doesn’t match the tone of the movie. As soon as you are introduced to Dennis Quaid’s character the movie is essentially telling you that this is gonna be shlock. It’s not to be taken seriously at all. And of course it’s gore porn…it’s a fricking body horror movie. There’s only one way to go in body horror.

The biggest thing I got from this movie is that Margaret Qualley is about as close to an OT10 and you can possibly get.

And Demi Moore still looks great naked in her 60’s
