David Simon worked for The Baltimore Sun City Desk for twelve years (1982–1995), wrote Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets (1991), and co-wrote The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood (1997) with Ed Burns. The former book was the basis for the NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street (1993–1999), on which Simon served as a writer and producer. Simon adapted the latter book into the HBO mini-series The Corner (2000).
the thing about The Wire is everything about it seems completely plausible and grounded in reality
there is nothing unrealistic or fantastic about it
simon took really complex stories with many layers and characters and thoughtfully developed each and every single aspect of them and the stories. we feel like we know them, all of them, the good guys and the bad guys

SPOILERS: Below
In S5 when Omar jumps out a high rise window after a shootout with Marlo it is based on a real event, in the show they had him jump out a lower floor so it didn’t seem so unbelievable

Is this a joke? It's well respected among the African American community. Previously shows always favored the cops and blacks were bad guys and the criminals. The Wire created a grey area where white cops could be good and bad and blacks could also be good and bad. Also showed hard realities of poor black people and gave the viewer empathy for them. Even sympathy for poor, black, drug addicts. Something that was never really seen on TV.
There are literally books written by black historians about the benefits of The Wire

I'm sure this is true, but that doesn't excuse the blatant actions of BET when they completely chopped up season 2.

I don't want to speak for him. However, I think smash might be black (NTTAWWT).
And, I think he means he doesn't care if white folks don't like it.
I'm not sure he's reading the room here. Hell, I watched because of this board, loved it and I'm whiter than sour cream. I'm effectively clear.

Im definitely not trolling. He just didnt do it for me. I MAY try and start it. If it doesnt hit me right this time it never will
Maybe it started off too fast?
I forgot how quickly (like the first 30 minutes) McNulty got into shite for simply being honest to a judge about the realities of the process, which pissed off his superiors greatly and basically put a target on his back. That was kinda nuanced (but also important) for being addressed so quickly in the premiere.

Doesn’t everybody “chop up” season 2 on their first watch? It’s not fully appreciated until a rewatch.

First I’ve heard of this. That really sucks.

I watched this video, most of the details I knew, but I didn't know cops only fired guns 3 times in the show, and all 3 times its was Prez.
This is such an amazing detail and so real. If you watch most TV shows featuring cops you would assume every cops fires their gun at least once a month. Thats they type of detail that makes the Wire so refreshing, the show tells an amazing story without falling back on the troupes we usually associate with cops and gangsters.

Didn't Mcnulty or Bunk shoot some beer bottles while drunk as frick? Maybe on the train tracks. Or did I imagine that?

I don't think this is true. Didn't the tactical teams in Hamsterdam fire shots? And I'm pretty sure there is a shootout with Partlow in season 5.

i took the video's reference to mean members of the Squad firing their weapons in the line of duty in the show
not the entire Baltimore PD, the actual Lt Daniels Squad itself

No he stated the Baltimore police dept and the entirety of officers in it. Some of these are pretty lame or big stretches.
