I think it was a play on something attributed to Dr. Suess, but that's disputed apparently. Anyway, it goes something like this: "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."

I paused the episode when he said that. Let it marinate for just a moment.

It really hit me. Hard. I suddenly lost my husband 8 years ago. My parents (all 4 of them...divorced and remarried for years) are in their 80's. The whole episode with Rebecca on the train remembering, possibly in an afterlife, etc. was just so beautiful.
Yes, it was sad and I was sobbing bitterly for good portions, but it was so beautiful as well. We all know things end. We know and have experienced death of loved ones. All of it tied together so perfectly. William was a perfect conductor. There definitely should be some Emmy's.
I can't wait to see how the Big 3 all remember and we see all the things they've done or will do. After these last few episodes...my hopes are high!

I just envision his kids telling him he was a bad/absent father and Miguel explaining to them how he grew up poor and thought providing for them by working long hours was him being a good father and that if he could go back he would, and that maybe he made a mistake but he did it out of love.
Miguel was a better character than they made him out to be.
IDK. In my mind, there isn't always a reason or way of reconciling. Sometimes, it's just that you know being together is the right thing. You don't have to beg forgiveness, give explanations, hash it all out. Sometimes you just start where you are and be happy for it.

I was also expecting that Rebecca would see the baby she lost.

thought it was a pretty meh episode honestly. I expected way more especially with how good the last few have been.
Gonna need you to unpack this sentiment. You have my curiosity.

I’ve always wondered when people lose a spouse and get remarried. Which one are they with in the afterlife? Miguel was chopped liver lol.
Rebecca might've been Miguel's person, but he definitely wasn't hers.
He never was. It was always Jack.

Rebecca was 100% Miguel's person. He always knew he was second in her heart to Jack, but was ok with that.
I'm so glad they are wrapping this up nicely.

Great episode…
(A worthy send off for Rebecca. Moore better win the Emmy.)
…except for the random family added in. I get the connection, but no one wants to see anyone other than the Pearsons at this point. The whole time, I was like, “Who the hell are these people?” Unnecessary side story. I felt no connection to them at all and wanted them just to get back to the family.

I do agree with that. It didn't hurt the episode but didn't really add anything.

I think the inclusion of Marcus' family story shoes that even on the worst single night in the Pearson history, not only was there good to come out of it (Alzheimer's treatment), but that even until he very end, Jack was forever touching people's lives for the better.

I took from it that his Alzheimer’s research potentially helped Rebecca live a more fulfilling and extended life with the disease.
So jack died, but they got Rebecca for longer because that kid survived.

Sir, you don’t talk about Gus like that.

Meh. I get it. It felt really contrived.
Other than, I loved the episode and the train metaphor.
I went back watched Mandy Moore’s video for “Candy” last night. I felt like a dirty old man.
Candy video

Poor Miguel. Always an afterthought.
I know. If the train is "Heaven" he gets snubbed in eternity. Maybe he is in hell.
Poor guy. Randalls Dad ushers her past him in a minute.

Think this is one last card up the sleeve for a tear jerker. Half expected Jack to roll over at the end and there be a crib there.
The Train usage should get the writers an Emmy nomination I believe. Has that metaphor ever been used? It is an incredible piece of writing. The use of the speaker on the train was also brilliant. The living on the other side able to get through and she hears it as a train announcement.
Wife and I watched it and I heard her sniffing several times. I didn't look. Would have got me going.

Yeah, she was a young 'un for that video.
Hopefully she was legal for In My Pocket. (I know what the lyrics are, but it always sounded like she was singing "Nothing but panties in my pocket..." at the time. It was the source of many jokes between me and my friends at the time, who although just out of college were likely much too old to be ogling her.
She's 1000X hotter closing in on 40, particularly in The Train than she ever was as a pop idol.

I agree. That did nothing but take away time with Pearsons. It felt like a weak filler and they didn't need a filler in this episode.

Marcus' family connection to the Pearsons isn't exactly the most tenuous one they've included before. To Fogleman's credit, they managed to work in the history of the dude who helped invent email at the beginning of Season 4, IIRC.

I know this will be a stretch but maybe Jack died so that boy could live. That’s what I thought when I watched it.
And then for him to come up with something to help with Alzheimer's, I don’t think it was filler at all.

Precisely. To lose Jack in the short term, only for what might've been his last act of kindness to encourage Marcus' dad -that set Marcus' family on the path that led him to helping discover the groundbreaking ALZ treatment. As a result of Jack's compassion, he set events in motion to see that others didn't have to suffer the effects of the disease like his own family did as they lost Rebecca.
