What's strange is that I've looked forward to this show every week. After last night, the hiatus doesn't bother me. It was that much of a letdown...boring. I kept watching the time and wondering when a finale type activity would happen, not necessarily Jack's death. Anything would have done. The separation of Jack and Rebecca wasn't it.

I completely agree. Some season finales like LOST or Game of thrones and I'm counting down the days until the premiere. This just didn't give me any excitement or longing for the season 2 premiere

Why are you rolling your eyes? That's how I feel about it. It just let the air out of the balloon for me. I will watch, but with most series that I like a lot, I'm upset about the waiting time after a cliffhanger season ending.

The episode was a total letdown. The only bright spot was how hot Mandy Moore looked in that blue dress and in the flash back at the end.

I thought the episode had a few nice moments but a finale has to give us more so ultimately it was a big letdown. I also can't help feeling mad about the amount of buildup we got towards ultimately an insignificant episode.
It seems like the writers knew they couldn't kill off Jack this early so now they are going to drag the shite out of it and the show will probably suffer majorly next season. I just hope it doesn't fully jump the shark.

I've said all along that the show would have to let off on the feels. They picked a bad time. But they had to have a filler episode. Should have been 3 episodes ago.
It's like the writers realized they were showing all of their cards.

Y'all nailed it, we got trolled hard.
And because I was bracing myself for Jack's death, I didn't engage in the story they were telling. I found myself not caring as much about the characters as the show rolled on and I say on the edge of my seat waiting for the car crash.
Epic fail in my book.

I didn't think it was that bad. It introduced Jack and Rebecca's life before they met, introduced a new story line for s2 (the separation), and keeps me hanging on by what Kate meant when she said "I'm the reason my dad died." The finale wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it was ok.
But yeah, I agree about "Memphis" or the episode following it switching with this one to be the season finale. It will be fine though. Looking forward to s2.

Yeah, my problem is the show has no problem going with the Holy shite endings to episodes, and they had the stage set and just dropped the ball. I came away disappointed as most here. Will we learn of Jack's death next season? No real reason to think we will.
Also, very disappointed in a couple who has been through everything and has early teens to just "separate" like that. Her letting him go after he laid it all out there was very cold-hearted. For her to not want to help him overcome his drinking, she just boots him out. Get real.

We did sort of get rolled, but I think comedian Jim Gaffigan explains it with this bit about vacations. He starts it out talking about all the pictures we take on our phones: “I’ve got more pictures of my kids than my dad even ever looked at me.”
He talks about going to Disney. At one point, he talks about how old all the rides are and how outdated they are: “Hey, let’s put them in this old caged thing, send them into a tunnel and when it stops, up pops a picture of Winnie the Pooh…. . Hey! Let’s cut out this log, put them in it, send them up a hill then crash them down to the bottom and get them wet.” He adds, “I was expecting a picture of Dumbo to pop up in that tunnel, or better yet, just a mirror – look, I’m the Dumbo!”
Then, he says it. He goes back to the voice of the person in charge of putting together the rides: “I mean really, what can they do? We’ve got their money!!”
Every response to the finale was negative in one way or another, some more than others. I did like the fight scene, great acting. I liked the way the kids keep making major life decisions based on their parents.
I read an interview where "Jack" said before the finale that dropping bombs in the middle of the season is much more intense. He said season ending episodes are not as easy. I think he was setting up this light finish. It was interesting to see Jack in his youth as basically "Jess" from Gilmore Girls.
Hey, I bet most, if not all of you will be back next season.
Gaffigan said it, "Hey, what can they do? We've got their money!" You're invested already. I haven't heard anyone say they are out. I'm sure maybe a few will quit on it, but not many. I look for a big bomb to drop early, like episode 1 or 2 of season 2.

She seemed right to me. Drinking too much for a week or two doesn't make you an alcoholic.

and kicking him out of his own house, a house that he had to sacrifice and ASK MONEY FROM HIS DAD to help get, because she "needs space"
yeah, that was shitty. Jack also said shitty things in the argument though.
That was a great scene. I kept thinking how much better Mandy Moore has gotten as an actress since she first hit the acting scene.

I was thinking that too, tough scene. Both just yelling over each other. Like a real argument. It's like both actors were given the lines and a clock. Say all this shite in this time regardless of what the other actor does. Just get it out!
Sort of like a real fight.
Still cold of her to send him out. Nothing helps a drunk guy who is down like putting him out.

by what Kate meant when she said "I'm the reason my dad died."
I talked to one of the writers about this very thing.
Jack dosed off in the theater and kate ran out of popcorn and candy so she ate jacks arm. He then bled out and died.

Furthermore, his dad was an abusive alcoholic and Jack holds a lot of personal responsibility for "leaving" his mom with his alcoholic dad. Becca's complete insensitivity to that makes her pretty cruel imo.

Becca lamented her bored life and desire to have a career.
Jack's right though. Singing in bars at 40 isn't a career. Being bored, unfulfilled or not needed by her kids and acting totally ungrateful for the numerous sacrifices Jack has had to make to give her and the family everything they need just makes her totally unlikeable.
And after Jack spills his guts over all the things he loves about her as he's being kicked out of his own house...she just lets him walk out the door.
It's like they live in two different worlds. Jack living in reality and Becca living in La La Land

How does Kate factor into this? I don't understand where you're getting this.
