the creepy uncle angle. They could have easily come up with another way to show why she would pull the trigger.
I don't think that was to show why she would pull the trigger. Lots of people who had been abducted and witnessed 2 of their friends get killed would pull the trigger. I think it was to show the multiple responses to abuse, especially prolonged abuse of any sort. One suffered serious physical abuse, and the other was molested and obviously tried to resist based on the physical scars.
Both tried to protect themselves in vastly different ways, and matured in vastly different ways. This is a crucial part of the characters we see early on. The desire to go after one of the girls and deferring to the authority of the other personalities. The quick thinking to tell the girl to pee on herself. These are telling results of forced maturation, IMO, being both acts of humility and self- preservation.
So another avenue may have provided a traumatic background for the girl, but not one that would have truly mirrored his.

That's an interesting take and you may be right and probably are. I just would like to think there was another way around the really creepy awkward parts. I knew very early on what was happening. I didn't care to see it played out to the degree that it was.
It's not as if I thought it took away from the movie. Again, I absolutely loved it. I was just turned off by that part of it. It won't stop me from watching multiple more times.

If I remember correctly those were a result of "cutting" which is a form of self harm.
