i AM NOT going conspiracy theorist here, but outside of a red panda (which is actually orange and an adorable animal) and red for menstruation, the association of the color Red and Maoist China has a somewhat negative connotation.

again, i am not in any way saying that's what Pixar, the Director, or anybody was shooting for, just saying that's not a great association with red and China (the country, not the chinese people)

Seriously, a non-communist Chinese person would be the first to make the connection. They think “Yeah, I saw what “Turning Red” did to my country, and tens of millions died and hundreds of millions starved over it.” By the way, Russians would make this connection too, so it has nothing to do with race and all about ideology.

agreed. i mean, i know they're called "red pandas" (actually orange/brown/black) but between the red revolution and red being associated to republicans (red state,) they could have called it "turning orange" or firefox instead.

as penance for politicing a bit, here's some adorable red pandas

Your defense of the movie, while sound, is also the problem with it.

Sure, periods and crushes on boy bands are normal for pre/early teens girls. The problem is that isn’t the audience for Pixar as a whole. In fact, that is the one age bracket that is least likely to watch this movie. I know I went through a stage starting around 12 where I thought I was “too cool” to watch Disney or animated movies in general.

The messaging is messy and confusing.

As others have described as well, all things being equal it’s just a boring, unfunny movie and not anywhere close to Pixar’s standards.

I have never been a teenage girl, black man, a clown fish who lost his son, or a Scottish princess etc. but I identified with Inside Out, Soul, Finding Nemo, and Brave.

This not so much.

Yeah, these people don’t realize they’re being the actual racists here. So long as the story and characters are engaging, I don’t give a frick what they look like or their gender, just entertain me please.

Ummm, I like the Chinese people. Got quite a bit of Chinese friends, but this would set alarm bells off even for them.

I didn't see the movie - all I had, at that point in the thread, was your statement. My bad if you clarified later, and I hear ya.

I get what you're saying. As someone who grew up more in the end of the Cold War era, being "Red" was more akin to the defunct Soviet Union than China - but as I learn more about the term, this is, AT BEST, absurdly tone-deaf.

And by saying tone-deaf, I'm being REALLY generous here in presuming ignorance over pandering.

Not to be confused with panda-ing.

Also, why didn't they just call in "Pandamonium"? I mean, I doubt they'd get sued by whomever made this in the 80s...

They were pretty much both equally as famous for it, because they derive it from the same source: communism. The Chinese will say turning red in their own tongue. Haven't been to Russia nor do I know many/any, but they'll say it over there.

It's Pandemonium and no it doesn't come from pandas. It's a combination of words derived from both Greek and Old English. It's first actual usage was in John Milton's Paradise Lost and was the name of Satan's Palace. Roughly translated into ancient speak it means "all demonic"

I know what the actual word is - that's why I used both quotation marks as well as a screenshot of the old cartoon I'm referring to.

Watched it not as bad as the board made me think. No really uncomfortable scenes but definitely boring for kids under maybe 11.
Better than cars. But bottom tier pixar.
