How so? He's always making really good indy and smaller budget flicks. You want to discount him just because of Iron Man 2?
1) He's been the lead in a few good movies that he gets credit for
2) He's a Movie TV/Board favorite
3) He's a great supporting actor who's won many awards
He gets credit.

I would say he's recently been getting more high profile roles. He has some good looking movies coming out the next couple years. As far as awards go I don't believe he's ever had an Oscar nod or Golden Globe just a lot of critic and film festival awards. He may get a lot of love from TD but I'm just saying I would like to see him in more high profile movies as well as his indy greats. I feel like we're just arguing semantics though and can agree he's a great actor

I like Anna Kendrick
Recent movies: Up in the Air, Scott Pilgrim, 50/50
She did get some recognition for the "Up in the Air" performance at least

This may sound silly to some, but I think Matt Damon is an underrated actor - compared to his colleagues.
I would agree with Sam Rockwell and Paul Giamatti, but think both are very well respected, esp. by me.
I thought Lane Smith was an underrated character actor prior to his passing.

He was always good as the southern bad guy (My Cousin Vinny, Places in the Heart, The Mighty Ducks, etc).

Jonathan Rhys Meyers - was fantastic in Tudors and didnt get as much love as he should have. Did great in Match Point also.
Giovanni Ribisi - his acting chops are just amazing. Just pigeonholed into the character type he plays. See Boiler Room for the win.
and i'll jump on the Anna Kendrick bandwagon

Mark Ruffalo. Not saying that he's the most ranged actor, but he's always solid in every role he plays in. The Brothers Bloom is something everyone needs to check out.
Love the Brothers Bloom! It surprised me.

Paul Giamatti,
This... He should have gotten a best supporting for Cinderella Man

My submission -- Steve Buscemi. I'll admit that there's a bit of homerism there because I'm a huge fan of his, but I think he's awesome. On a list of the 25 best actors 1995 to present, he absolutely has to be on there. Has he ever really delivered a stinker performance when placed in a serious role? "Serious role" pretty much excludes that Spy Kids/Adam Sandler garbage. I think he qualifies as underrated because he's the type of guy who nobody really mentions when we talked about skilled actors, but whenever he's mentioned people almost always acknowledge him as good. Just my opinion.

I'll actually give a name of an actor that really is underrated. Most people wouldn't know him by name alone unlike most of the people listed in this thread - John Hawkes.
He got an Oscar nomination for Winter's Bone. And look for him to be a potential darkhorse for the Best Actor award for his performance in The Sessions.
