I had subscriptions to X-Force and X-Factor at the time that was going on. It's been my favorite comic storyline pretty much my whole life. It got me into comic books pretty much.

To echo some other storylines that people have suggested:
Matt Fraction's Hawkeye run
Fraction/Brubaker Iron Fist run

I do too, but I think it loses a lot if you are new to comics. Part of the fun of that crossover was everyone getting "new" positions/alliances/etc.

It won't have an impact on someone reading Marvel for the first time.

If you're an X-Men fan, start with Giant-Size X-Men then follow it with Uncanny X-Men 94. This is the first appearance of the Colossus/Nightcrawler/Wolverine/Storm team of X-Men and began the insanely good run of Claremont (from 1975 to 1991). You can supplement that with New Mutants (starting in 1982) and/or X-Factor (in 1986) if you want. This will take you through a lot of great X-Men storylines (Genosha, Dark Phoenix, Days of Future Past, X-Tinction Agenda, Fall of the Mutants, etc).

The Spiderman titles from the same era are solid as well (Peter Parker the Spectacular Spiderman, Amazing Spiderman) as well as Fantastic Four.

Someone previously mentioned Peter David's work on X-Factor. Prior to that he had a fantastic 12-year run on the Incredible Hulk (1987 - 1999) that created the Hulk most people know today.

There were some fun crossovers (Terminus, for example) and of course the Infinity Gauntlet series (which may provide spoilers for MCU's Infinity War pt2).

Just messin

I just collect them, I dont read them.

The Watchman would literally be the only comic/graphic novel I could suggest to somebody seeing as thats the only one I've ever read. And in general I read a lot.

Avengers volume 3, mainly in the 20s (Ultron Unlimited) and around 50 (the year long Kang invasion arc)

Pretty much anything in that run from issue 1 until the end of the Red Mist story is good. The run between Red Mist and Disassembled, though? Straight trash. The Captain Britain from that run was godawful.

Marvel's monthly stuff is kind of garbage right now. I'd stick to some classics. House of M, Infinity War, World War Hulk, Marvel Zombies, Secret Invasion, and even Secret War.

IMHO the best mainstream book being published right now is over in DC and it is Doomsday Clock.

The new is super solid too. But it suffers from the AoA problem that half of the fun is the crazy team ups.

If you have free time from reading everything else thats been listed, Wolverine vs. Sabertooth was short and sweet.

Was always really good or really bad. Never in between. I loved the issue where they introduced battle force 2000, then killed them three panels later.

GI Joe was what really got me into Marvel comics to begin with. Of course, I was a very young child and not too critical about Vietnam War history or the idea of middle-aged vets flying running all over the world fighting a high tech global terrorist organization headquartered in a small American town.
