Yes and no.
Leifeld's original Deadpool had very little in common with today's Deadpool. He was initially a villain, then turned anti-hero. He was a sarcastic a-hole with excellent weapon skills and a strong regenerative ability, not the 4th-wall-breaking, practically immortal, creatively humorous vigilante we have today. Leifeld was long gone from Marvel by the time Wade Wilson (the name being a bit of a snarky salute to DC's Terminator, Slade Wilson, from which a lot of DP was initially taken) became the unkillable quipster.
Like Stan's many comments on how the X-Men were allegorical to the racial issues and the Civil Rights movement, Rob is engaging in few retcons ("retroactive continuity", or "rewriting of history" for the non-comic-nerds). In other words, Leifeld laid the foundation for the character, but the character's most widely known structure (the one Reynolds would fall in love with and push onto the big screen) was built by many other hands (see: Nicieza, Waid & Kelly).
From much of my reading, the comic book industry has ironically been (at times) a cut-throat industry (see: Bill Finger as a prime example). With that, I can understand a bit of the constant desire to make sure that everyone knows something is YOUR creation (to keep others from trying to claim it from you), but throwing a public hissy fit for being slighted (and yes, it was a purposeful slight when he had been invited to the afterparties of the previous two movies) doesn't do you any favors.

I get all this, but there is a big difference between being a popular comic book character and being what Deadpool is today. That was my overall point.
You definitely added additional layers of why Liefeld is owed nothing though.

Liefeld is a hack. Always has been. He caught lightning in a bottle in the early 90s and he has been shredded by critics since then for the stupid outfits with the giant guns and the pouches everywhere. Hell, look at all of the characters he created with "blood" in the title/name- they are all Cable. All of them. Disney had more reason to elevate Jim Starlin, as he is the architect behind the 2 biggest movies in the MCU and the best villain. But this whining by Liefeld is part of his usual charm.

I’m ceding to those who know more, but if marvel had an issue with him before I guess they just figured screw him now that the Deadpool movie franchise is done.

I've always been convinced that Liefeld and McFarlane were popular because their art was at a level that kids and amateur artists could almost replicate.

There is honestly probably some truth to this, but artistic tastes vary wildly among comic fans. Personally, I don't care if McFarlane and Liefeld don't drawn anatomically perfect figures. Comic artists who draw like that are extremely boring to me. It's all the same. I appreciate cartoonists a lot more. Not saying I don't enjoy Jim Lee's art but I'd rather look at Skottie Young's art all day. J. Scott Campbell doesn't draw 100% anatomically accurate females all the time and people give him shite but it's mostly because they are super hot and SJWs hate it. That said I understand art style and preference is totally subjective.

Young RL absolutely was. Older RL has always seemed more humble than his younger self. I think people still hold him accountable today to the way he was back then.

but ok go ahead and glaze him b/c MUH DISNEY.
This is a fundamentally stupid and dishonest thing to say, and one of which a young RL would type. IF there is a legit issue with how Disney and Feige treat creators, then your premise is nothing more than a "MUH LIEFELD" as you so eloquently put it. You're inability to escape your bias is not different than those you criticize for the same thing.
