REM - Pretty much what Baloo said. I would add that you should also listen to Murmur as it's solid all the way through.
Springsteen - Listen to Born to Run. It has a lot of his most popular songs. Nebraska is often regarded as his best album, though.

The purpose of this is not to call people out that are huge fans, but to call myself out for not understanding the rave. I am talking about musically appreciated bands/artists, not Bieber or Nickleback. Please tell me what I am missing or point me in the right direction.
1) Radiohead
Many credit this band as one of the best of the 90s. I have heard multiple songs off of many albums. I have also listened to Ok Computer entirely. It wasn't bad, but it didn't "move" me. Should I give it another go? Is there another album I should listen to first?
2) REM
I have heard all of the singles and a few other popular ones. It's not bad at all. I just don't get the importance of this band nor could I see myself purchasing entire albums. Is it non popular stuff that makes it great? Early stuff?
3) Phish
Saw them live once and it was a blast. The atmosphere was great, but as far as appreciating the music I have trouble. I like a good jam as much as the next guy, and respect the talent of the band, what am I missing?
4) Bruce Springsteen
I realize this could be a regional thing. He has written some awesome tunes, but his following is unreal. If I am traveling to NYC/Jersey I am listening to Billy Joel. What is his iconic album? Also, if I hear Springsteen's "Jersey Girl" is his best song, my head will explode.
5) Kiss
Do not get period.
I read this thread and my head was nodding up and down the whole time. I would have added Widespread Panic, and removed Kiss only because I never cared about Kiss enough to even try to get into them. But I totally agree with you on this. I've given Radiohead more than a fair shake, but it just never hit me.
I've always found REM annoying, with the exception of "at my most beautiful", which is an incredible song.
I'm generally reluctant to even admit I don't really care for Springsteen as I fear if I say it out loud, some Jersey transplant might jump out from behind a bush and beat the shite out of me. But I don't see any of them hiding around here right now, so i'll go ahead and admit it.

No no.
ATLiens > Aquemini > Stankonia > SB/LB > Southernplaylisticadillacmuzik > Idlewild
And Idlewild isn't nearly as terrible as people claim. Call the Law and Mutron Angel are fantastic tracks, and there are two or three others that are quite solid as well.

I would imagine this topic could start a pretty good debate

Outkast albums? For sure. I feel very strongly that ATLiens is their best album, and one of the best albums of all time. And I'm happy to preach that gospel.

I agree. I recommended Aquemini because I feel like it's a little more accessible to a new listener, and representative of their overall sound. ATLiens is their masterpiece, and one of the greatest albums of the 90's. I still listen to it regularly almost 20 years later.

quote:Chronic Town to Life's Rich Pageant are what you need to try. If you don't like that, then just write them off. Of course, it's going to be totally different hearing it today. When that stuff was coming out in the early 80's, it was so much better than just about anything else you could hear.

Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, ATLiens, Aquemini, and Stankonia are all outstanding.

I agree. And ATLiens is the best of the bunch.
And, fwiw, SB/LB would be great as a single album.

The only issue I have with Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik is the production is a little sub-par. I realize why that is, but still. The jump from that album to ATLians was amazing.

1. Phish
2. Tool
3. Metallica
4. New "country"
5. Bands like Five Finger Death Punch. Their music is awful and their name is too stupid to take seriously.

Three great bands.
Listen to Exile on Main St. and American Beauty entirely. If you don't like those, there is no hope for you with the Stones or Dead.
I'm sure your view on ACDC will not change, they're style really doesn't flex.

Radiohead- Great band. My favorite album is The Bends
REM- one of the most important bands in musical history
Phish- never got into it
Springsteen- I hate everything he's done with the exception of Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad
Kiss- I got nothing

REM's 80s output on IRS is arguably the most important in the development of American pop music. It is literally impossible to overrate their influence. They are the dividing line between punk and post-punk and alternative (or what was called college rock back in the day). It's cool to not like 'em. Nobody likes everything, but yeah... you should check out their early stuff. It is a massive legacy, almost entirely based on four albums (Murmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction, and Life's Rich Pageant). I like their later stuff, but had they died in a massive car accident in 1988, they'd still be a massively influential band. That middle period (Document, Green, Monster, Out of Time) is pretty much the template on how an independent band "should" transition to the mainstream while maintaining critical cred.
Could be the best post ever on the TDMB.
They are the reason for so many.

"the musical wasteland that was the decade of the 80s."
Wow. The 80s didn't match the 60s or early 70s bit it was FAR from a musical wasteland. If you thought the 80s was a wasteland I can't imagine what you must think of the abysmal last 15+ years of music.
As for the OP, I agree on Radiohead. Haven't been able to get into them or Kiss. Disagree on REM, just about everything they did throughout the entire decade of the 80s was great. Disagree with a lot of the Springsteen criticism. He had good music from the 70s all the way through Human Touch.
