He was in Cacophony with Marty Friedman.

He also played on one of the David Lee Roth solo albums…tragic story with this guy…he has ALS and by the early 90’s could no longer perform…by 1996 he could no longer speak.

Yes, have an old Cacophony album from the mid 80’s. Also have a Racer X, and a couple of Tony MacAlpines. MacAlpine’s compositions/songs for me were slightly better to my ears. Still have the first Steeler album and imported Yngwie Malmsteen Rising Force debut I bought from Bon Marche mall in the early 80’s that just blew me away. Remember putting that on and couldn’t believe my ears. Still listen to that album.

One of the absolute best and it is truly pitiful that the disease silenced him so early in his career.

Yeah, I have both Cacophony cds. ALS sucks.

There's an excellent documentary about him from about 11 years ago. It's called "Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet". Highly recommended.

Do we remember Jason fricking Becker?!!?

The song you linked broke me when I first heard it. It is absolutely stunning that he wrote and recorded that entire album at 16 and 17.

Every last damn note is perfect.

Check out Shawn Lane from the 80's. Recently there's a phenom named Matteo Mancuso....his playing is a jaw dropping display of right hand finger picking wizardry, if you play guitar you will realize how much of an average player you are after watching Matteo.

But what about the WRITING? That's what set JB apart. Every song on Perpetual Burn is absolutely beautiful, and features songwriting skill one would imagine present in much older folks.

There were a ton of guitar hero instrumental albums in the 80’s, most of which were produced by Mike Varney with Shrapnel records. But NONE of them did what Perpetual Burn did. Like Scrub said, it was out of this world.

The only one that came close on Shrapnel was Marty Friedman's Dragon's Kiss. It has the electric version of Thunder March, which was on Marty's big-time solo record, Scenes. (BTW, Scenes, and then the 2 that followed, are Becker-level material, just not as metal.)

I always thought Vinnie Moore and Tony MacAlpine were meh.

I loved Vinnie Moore and Tony Macalpine back then, especially Macalpine’s Maximum Security…both of those guys have continued to make instrumental albums, but from what I’ve heard, they are awful…

But the songs, man. Even just the intro keyboards to Altitude and you know this is on another level.

What about Guy Mann Dude?

Oh yeah I recall all the buzz about Becker back then. I never knew about his illness until now.
Damn damn shame, wildly talented guy.

Chris Impelletteri was another one of those million notes per second guys…I have to say I still enjoy his version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow…

Still have this on vinyl. Probably bought it for the cover. Killer shredding going on. Big fan of The Rods, whose self titled album from the early 80’s is awesome.
