With respect to the pentatonic blues and metal shredding aficionados … it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things … that is my favorite guitar sound. George Harrison, Peter Buck (especially) and Johnny Marr are my personal guitar heroes.

Just wanted to see if there were any kindred spirits here.

Incredible. Some of his work is not human. He’s a freak.

I saw him in a solo concert in Huntsville, Ala., several years back. Awesome. Not just the Rickenbacker 12 but he played a Martin 7-string, with a doubled G, and he just wore that thing flat out. Eight Miles High was jaw dropping.

I love Lennon's rhythm guitar on the early stuff.

Some would disagree, but I would add Rob Buck (RIP) of 10,000 Maniacs to this list.

Maybe my fav rock sound? The Byrds, The Plimsouls, REM, early Tom Petty, The Church’s Starfish album, etc..

Love The Plimsouls ‘A Million Miles Away’(my fav song), Tom Petty’s ‘American Girl’, REM’s ‘Driver 8’, The Church’s ‘Reptile’, etc..primarily due to that distinctive Rickenbacker sound.

This dude is the official state historian of New Mexico and none of his other work sounds like this, but he put this out in 2017 … I first heard it on a compilation of 12-string electric songs … and it is an absolute ear worm.

All hail Susannah!

FYI I own a short-scale John Lennon Rickenbacker, great little guitar after I had it modified to allow all pickup combinations. And I have owned a couple of Rick 12s in the past but they are persnickety SOBs to deal with and I currently have a DanElectro 12 that’s much easier to deal with that gives me 90% of the sound (especially with a Janglebox compressor) for 1/6 the price.

McGuinn doing Eight Miles High earlier this year … I will point out that the man is 81 years old playing this.

This is such an interesting thread. My 14 year old son loves this Rickenbacker sound and is always asking me if I can hear that Rickenbacker ring in a song. He wants one so bad, I just can't pull the trigger on one for him because of the price.

On that note, the Ric jangle is a product not only of their in-house proprietary pickups and hardware, but also their typical use of all-maple construction and a clearcoated rosewood fingerboard.

And you don't see legit Ric copies in the marketplace because Rickenbacker has one of the most aggressive legal teams in the business enforcing the company's IP, patents and trademarks. I don't think they license any of it.

Ric eplacement parts are scarce in the marketplace, and whether new, used or vintage they are typically EXPENSIVE.

The point being, for all intents and purposes ... if you want the Ric jangle, you gotta obtain an actual Ric to get it.

There’s nothing like a Rickenbacker and you’re right about it being a sum of lot of things and about their aggressiveness against copycats.

As noted the DanElectro electric 12 gets you 85 to 90% there although a compressor is essential. But to get all the way there you have to get a Ric and while the Ric 12 sound is glorious they are absolute PITA’s to deal with.
