I may get shite for this, but I think Evan Felker from Turnpike Troubadours is a very gifted songwriter.

This is absolutely true. I just spent half an hour discussing "Evangaline" with a girl on the ride back to town tonight. Excellent lyrics, no doubt.

I'm glad someone mentioned him. One of my favorites. Another that died far too young. Damn Lorrie Morgan.

Eric Church can be a legit songwriter when he isn't trying to make money. Sinners Like Me, These Boots, and Lightning are all great songs. Chief is just ok, but the dude has written some good stuff. Not saying he is worthy of being in this conversation, but it isn't fair to completely dismiss him either.

George Strait does not write
Well, he does, but all of his really great songs were written by others (Dean Dillon - The Chair; Ocean Front Property; If I Know Me; as well as Tennessee Whiskey for George Jones; Sanger D. Shafer - All My Ex's; Does Ft. Worth Ever Cross Your Mind).

Whitley didn't write any of his hits

Now as a singer? Yes one of the greatest to ever live

Yea a some of his songs do suck .But I'm talking about singer/songwriters out of Nashville today. Church is the best.

Yeah, it was just hard for me to wrap my mind around, Hank, Jr., Nelson, Kristofferson, Eric Church.

FWIW, Kristofferson wrote 'Me & Bobby McGee' and 'Help Me Make It Through The Night' while sitting on a platform in the GOM. He was flying birds for PHI out of Laffy.

Technically he does write, but there is only one song on Strait Out of The Box, that he wrote. I just looked up 50 Number 1's, and he didn't write any of those. While looking that up though, I think we need to include Dean Dillon.

Lots of good names have been mentioned. I think Marty Stuart is an excellent songwriter. Cool or not, Garth Brooks actually wrote some pretty good songs.

My late Dad's all time favorite was Hank Williams. I'll go with that one.

What's evident, here, is that nearly all of us realize that few country "stars" write their own songs.

There are some pretty dang good female songwriters, too.

After researching it, you're completely right. I thought Whitley wrote more of his own stuff than he did.

I mean, he's better than most. But he's still pretty cheesy at times.

I'll throw out a couple more names:

Gram Parsons - died way too young.

Jay Farrar - Has written some excellent alt country for Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt.
