If you can't write or create, then you're not in the discussion for the best. You are just playing other people's music.
Wait, so you think the best studio musicians in the world are told what notes to play? And you also think that’s where their playing and creativity ends? Lolololololol
Example, you know the famous guitar solo that begins Chattahoochee? The dude that played it came up with it on the fly in the studio. Wanna know how I know? I used to do sound for him when he played his true passion during jazz shows. Complete virtuoso playing mostly his own compositions. He’s famous for his honky tonk playing, but that’s not all he plays. The studio work just kept his bills paid. Anyone that has spent time in the studio will tell you these guys are brought in to come up with something creative and catchy to set the song apart and on a fast timeline.

If another guitarist copied your friend's playing should he get full credit for the piece?

Johnny Ramone would be offended. He always claimed that he was not a musician.....just a dude who had a guitar.
No offense intended. Johnny played guitar as it was originally intended—the rhythm section.

The musician that creates and composes any piece should get the credit.
And not a friend, just a professional acquaintance

You're talking about Brent Mason, and he gets paid big for that session work, and he gets paid up front. He doesn't have to wait for royalties or anything else. No risk if the song flops.
He can do that, because he's such a great session player and can come up with those licks off the cuff. It's his decision to do things the way that he does, because he doesn't have to dedicate much time to makin a livin, and has more time to do his own thing.
He gets credit on liner notes too. Jim McBride wrote that song, but Brent's licks made it better for sure.
Jim McBride was my mailman at one time.

I hope I get to work with him one day. Let him put his spin on my simple stuff.

EVH will always be the man to me since back in jr high.
Not that i think hes the best but someone who ive become more impressed with in regards to broad style ability is John 5. He seems pretty down to earth as well.

I’m 10 points dumber for reading this. McCartney couldn’t lick Geddy Lee or Les Claypool’s ballsack.
