Saw Rick Derringer open for REO in 1980 or 81.
Saw Hall and Oates open for ELO in 81.

Love this band a lot, but....
Saw Deftones at the Varsity in 2013, I think.
Periphery was the opener announced pretty much just a day or so before.
Periphery blew me away and were levels above Deftones.
Still am a huge fan of both bands, but in a live setting, Periphery was just amazing.

1992 or 1993. Lenny Kravitz opened for The Cult at Beard Eaves. This was before Are You Gonna Go My Way hit. Lenny was semi big after Always on the Run, but a lot of folks still didn't know who he was.
Lenny was already pretty big at that time or at least on par with The Cult. I saw them late Jan. maybe Feb in 92 at Municipal Auditorium in NO. I say this as both a Lenny and huge Cult fan. Yes, Lenny was 100x better and should have been a headliner by that point. I just remember Ian of The Cult complaining how the audience wasn't showing appreciation or some shite like that. WTF? Lenny just brought it.

At Auburn about 20 years ago, Buddy Guy opened, Govt. mule was next. When Kenny Wayne Sheppard came out, about half the audience left. He looked pissed.

Went to see an unknown band named Styx open for Wishbone Ash at the Warehouse in 1975.
I can’t confirm that Styx stole the show because I was unconscious by the time Wishbone Ash hit the stage

Those little teeny boppers that were waiting for the Monkees didn’t know what hit them.

For me it was the Steve Miller band in July of 1977 blowing Peter Frampton out Arrowhead Stadium. After Steve Miller played the Peter Frampton show was considerably lower energy.

Metallica opening for Ozzy
2 down votes care to explain.
It's widely known Metallica blew Ozzy off the stage on that tour, and he dreaded going out and following them.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers actually opened for Kiss in 1976. Such a strange ticket lol. If I remember correctly Gene became a huge fan of TPHB.
I know a guy who went to the Columbus, Georgia show on that tour. Apparently the concert was at the end of November and Petty's debut album had only been out 3 weeks or so and was a virtual unknown.
My buddy said that the Heartbreakers pretty much got booed off stage.
