Like pretty much everyone else has said, he certainly has the right to do it but that doesn't make it less of an a-hole move. I do take umbrage wiht this though:
If I live 6 or 7 hours away and am planning a mini-vacation to fly in, get a hotel, and attend the show, in waht universe should I be thinking "well...I know this date has been scheduled for over a year but I mean what if he cancels it for sports instead?" Why would anyone in that situation be thinking abotu the possibiltiy of having to cancel their hotel? I mean yeah in hindsight it sounds like a good idea but I'm not going to call someone a dumbass for getting left high and dry here.
No shite he will. That doesn't mean that the hypohetical person mentiond above can just take off work, book another flight, get another sitter, etc etc again on a whim.
