Pretty much all my favorite bands are not well known.
I shared a playlist of about 3,000 songs with my wife (no pics) and she told me she heard of maybe 10 bands out of the whole list.

Always thought The Screaming Trees were underrated. Dust was a great album. Also enjoy Mark Lanegan's solo work. Whiskey for the Holy Ghost, Field Songs and Bubblegum are great albums.

Avatar... a Swedish metal band who I put off listening to for years because of the gimmicky face paint of the lead singer. They came to Huntsville a couple of years ago and it was one of my favorite concerts ever. The lead singer is an entertainer and they put on a hell of a show. They're coming back to Huntsville in May. They had a new album come out and every song is different from each other.
LINK Don't Go In The Forest
LINK In The Airwaves... one of their heavier ones
LINK Tonight We Must Be Warriors
LINK Death and Glitz... love this guitar riff

Old school: King Crimson up through the 74 lineup.
Probably the symphonic metal bands such as Nightwish that are huge in Europe and down South but can't get big in America.

Kamelot would probably be in that same category.

Showing my age but I really liked the Cold. The were big in NO and BR when I was at LSU but did not hit big on the national scene. I also still like the Producers

This is the music board. Everything posted is either old arse southern rock, unpopular songs by popular bands, or posters using abbreviations for unpopular bands like the whole world knows who they are
I’ll throw Local H in here. One of the more genuine 90s grunge era bands to me. Enjoyed them long after their two radio hits.

I think everything is comparitive...
Testament - love them, but nowhere near the Big 4 or other "Metal/Thrash" top level bands
Municipal Waste
Opposite end...huge in Europe but realtively unknown here...
Elbow
Biffy Clyro - sell out Wembley and other huge arenas in Eruope, but see them in 300 person to 2000 at most clubs in the US

I already posted earlier, but this is specific to the OP. If you like Vampire Weekend, here are some other bands that you might like but haven't heard of (some of them were in my previous list):
Born Ruffians
Ra Ra Riot
Bishop Allen
Postal Service
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Broken Social Scene
