Reznor praised Cash's interpretation of the song for its "sincerity and meaning," going so far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore.
If it was the case, then Johnny should have put down the gospel, and prison bullshite and wrote something that came close to it in his 50+ year career..but didn't..till he finally came across it. Rubin had sent the song to Cash before, but the veteran musician couldn’t hear beyond the industrial noise and anguished howl that featured in the original. So its not like he even discovered the song on his own one day.
Thats what you do when trying to put yourself over, shine up a legend on his deathbed.. besides, everything that Trent Reznor has said since 2001 has been pandering horseshite anyways

My idea of greatest cover ever changes from day to day. Here are today's nominees.
Nothin' but a House Party-J. Geils Band
Roadrunner-Legion of Mary
Legion of Mary was a short lived side project of Jerry Garcia's with Merl Saunders, Martion Fierro (former saxophonist with Santana), John Kahn, and Ron Tutt (Elvis's drummer)
Soul Deep-Clarence Carter
I Heard it Through the Grapevine-CCR
Theme from The Flintstones-Sting, Omar Hakim, Kenny Kirkland, and Branford Marsalis
Barbara Ann-The Who
Time Has Come Today-The Ramones
Twilight Zone-William Shatner (with Warren Haynes)

t isn't even his best cover song.
Streets of Bakersfield is better (really...all of his covers of Buck Owens songs are pretty awesome).
It isn't even his best Elvis Cover Song...his version of Little Sister is much better than his cover of Suspicious Minds.
This is his best cover song. I'd put Truckin and The Grand Tour in second and third place.
Long White Cadillac
Oops it's a toss up between Long White Cadillac and this one. I forgot this was a cover because no one has ever heard of the original.
The Late Great Golden State

How has Joe Cocker "A Little Help From My Friends" not on the list?

These are pretty good.
(I know) I’m Losing You-Rare Earth
(I know) I’m Losing You-Rod Stewart
You Keep Me Hangin’ On-Vanilla Fudge
Someone mentioned the Fab Four. This was one of their best IMO.

Nice list! I was going to mention Keep me Hanging on by the Fudge.
The Faces also did excellent covers of Maybe I'm Amazed and I Wish it Would Rain.
Nilsson's cover of Badfinger's 'Without You' is right near the top.
Ram Jam did awesome with Black Betty.
Blinded by the Light and All Along the Watchtower are way up there like others have mentioned.
Guns n Rose's Live and Let Die and Knocking on Heaven's door are awesome.
The Black Crowes cover Otis Redding on Hard to Handle.
Gov't Mule has done a ton of amazing covers including Swewt Leaf, Mr. Big, Effigy, Down and Out in NYC, and Chameleon by Herbie Hancock.
Crossroads by Cream is one of the best.
The live version of I shot the Sheriff by Clapton is epic, especially the 1977 version.

Good ones.
Off off topic: I’d like to see Beth Hart do a tribute to Irma Thomas with her take on It’s Raining.
