I used to be all in on those guys. Saw them at Bonnaroo 2008 and was hooked.
But The Waterfall was the last album I really dug into. They seem to have moved into more contemporary music with some softer psychedelic tendencies which just doesn’t do it for me. Their progression from It Still Moves to Z to Evil Urges to Circuital was a hell of run though.
Still a great live show. I imagine they’ll be playing a secret show in NOLA after their Jazzfest set.

never a bad time to repost Tyrone my fav live song of theirs:
The dynamics on the stage are incredible. This is actually Erykah’s song being covered by MMJ…a great Badu song.
She’s a very prideful woman. To see the interaction between she and Jim is pretty cool. Dude coulda banged Andre3000’s ex that night lol

The opened the Nola show with Jim’s solo work “State of the Art” and blew the roof off the joint.
Great song and album, I really like when they do a couple Jim solo songs, New Life is great too live.
The new MMJ stuff sounds way too close to Jim’s latest solo work, Uniformed Distortion.

Circuital Kicks arse
The first two tracks are probably the best two songs back to back on any of their records. Absolute perfection, but the rest of the record falls slightly short of that. I love Circuital overall, but Z, It Still Moves and At Dawn (my personal favorite) are overall better records.
Waterfall was very good but more experimental overall. It has some down moments in it, but I appreciate what they did. Their self titled one that came out after that in 2021 was a big disappointment for me. There are a couple of great songs on it, but overall I was not a big fan. JJ started rehashing melodies from previous songs, and it felt uninspired and lame for the most part. While it isn't necessarily bad, it was one that I only listened to a handful of times an never looked back.
I am excited for the new one coming soon. The first song they released is promising.

It Still Moves is one of those desert island records for me. I even flew to Atlanta for the 20th anniversary show a couple years back. Between ISM and Z they have two legit great albums with Circuital coming close. Most bands don't even have one.
As for more recent releases, the self-titled one has improved over time for me. I read that they were inspired by jazz music when making it, hence how long some of the songs are. These are all killer live tracks:
In Color
Never In The Real World
Complex
Both of the Waterfall albums hold their own. Spring, Tropics(!!), In Its Infancy, Run It, Wasted, Feel You. Sheesh.
The last 3 live albums (volumes 2-4) are fantastic. Anyone who doesn't like The Tennessee Fire should def give Vol. 4 a shot.
I took a long break between seeing them until a couple years back, but the fact they're as good if not better live than they've ever been is enough reason for me to travel to see them. Hoping for more southern US dates to be announced soon because they take precedence for me over most bands.

One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Still remember the security guards by the stage (older black dudes) were bopping to the music all night.
