Big Star is always talked about. If anything, they are overrated. This is because they are rated so very highly, yet no one knows any of their songs. Or, they know the song, but have no idea who Big Star is.

I was given the chance to list bands I consider under-appreciated. Big Star was one of the best bands of their era. Most listeners, even classic rock-era listeners, have never even heard of them, much less heard them.
Even the Velvet Underground, who used to always win discussions like this until everybody got tired of seeing them listed and started thinking "They can't be underrated -- they're on too many lists!", have actually been heard by relatively few people.

Solid group who put out some fantastic music in the Terry Kath years. I'd say currently those contributions are overlooked. Tends to happen decades down the road.
Their 80's stuff was just awful.

Big Star is indeed under appreciated, IMO. And too few people know Alex Chilton. Met him once in NO and heard him talk a out both of his bands. Cool and very nice guy.

<------- I take it you are referring to the great Terry Kath.
Kath was a good songwriter but he wasn't the 'main' songwriter: you had Robert Lamm, James Pankow, and Cetera. When Kath died, the heart and soul left the band. Not only did he have a souldful voice but his guitar playing was excellent. Hendrix loved Kath and because they started having softer hits, Kath's guitar playing wasn't featured anymore. He was frustrated but he 'took' over the sessions for Chicago VIII and there is a decided guitar presence on there: Anyway You Want, Hideaway, Oh Thank You Great Spirit (Kath's ode to Hendrix), Til We Meet Again, Ain't It Blue, Long Time No See.
If you want to hear them with a guitar presence, listen to Chicago at Carnegie Hall ('71). He was the leader of the band and there were plenty of solos back in the day.
It's a shame Jann Wenner has a personal vendetta against them. For them to not be in RnR HOF is a crime. Say what you will about Cetera but the guy could sing and play a good bass. On some of my prior posts, I have plenty of clips of Chicago back in the day, especially Kath. I will leave these here:
In The Country
Hideaway

One of my all time favorites. A ridiculously underrated band.

I was a teen during the very late 60's and early 70's and Chicago was hugely successful and very popular among the high school band circuit (I thought because of the brass and the tightness of the arrangements). Steely Dan was kind in that category as well.
I was more into hard rock groups like Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin but still enjoyed Chicago. You just never hear them on classic rock stations and never hear people even talk about them (except here).

When they had the name Chicago Transit Authority they rocked, once they were considered Chicago only they kinda sucked.

Uh, while they flamed out quickly from their peak, you should retract that statement in order to retain a modicum of credibility, sir.

Very popular, very well considered, depending upon the make up (line up).
Forgotten, yeah. If that´s underrated, then yes.

I was certainly a big fan of Chicago in the early years and did my part to help with record sales. I have seen them in concert three times...both in outdoor stadiums (Oakland 1975) and indoor arenas (1977, 1980, dates are estimates). Serious brass.

I saw them in the very early 70's in Memphis . I was into different music at the time but thought it was one of the top concerts I've been to .
