Say what you want about Henley, but End of the Innocence contains some of my favorite lyrics ever.

I'm an honorary Sean Connery, born '74
There's only one of me
Single-handedly raising the economy
Ain't no chance of the record company dropping me
Press be asking do I care for sodomy
I don't know, yeah, probably
I've been looking for serial monogamy
Not some bird that looks like Billy Connolly
But for now I'm down for ornithology
Grab your binoculars, come follow me

O' beautiful, for spacious skies
But now those skies are threatening
They're beating plowshares into swords
For this tired old man that we elected king
Armchair warriors often fail
And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers clean up all details
Since daddy had to lie

Totally agree.

And totally agree Henley is the most pretentious. The guy just seems miserable.

And I love the Eagles.

Scott Crapp's still #1 in my book for cheesy writing that's supposed to be taken seriously. I mean with lyrics like:

The cradle of civilisation sparks my fascination
Truth ignites our generation to change what's been programmed
Inside the mind
Don't you turn a blind eye
Change what's been programmed inside
Don't you turn a blind eye
Listen to me when i tell you
Feel the passion in my breath

... it's hard to decide if the guy's a pretentious douchebag ... or just a retard.

It seems like double talk. That's an easy way to fill up space, but it doesn't have a real meaning,or commitment to any train of thought. It's a cop out.

Stephen Jenkins is a genius lyricist. However, he's a dick bag for a human.

Honestly, I always went with my first impression on that line. For me, "spirit" referred to the spirit of the speaker asking for wine, as in "wow, what a spirit you've got--you still think life's ok and want to have fun" or whatever. You know, as in "We haven't had such a spirit in VISITORS since 1969."

Not so much the play on words on the wine as a spirit. But I guess that's on me for missing that whole thing.

Andrew Bird - very talented, but really pretentious (mostly good way)

Colin Meloy - overly pretentious for talent level. Deserves a dickpunch.

Henley is a major league douchebag, but is he pretentious, or are the people who look for deep hidden meaning in the lyrics pretentious? I'm inclined to the latter.

Hmmm. This is a good point. Douchebag does not necessarily equal pretentiousness, and I had not thought of it that way before.

Yeah because he's trying to flee from the cops in the car. Kid Charlemagne has fantastic lyrics and its about how Owsley the acid man went out of business because of coke-heads.

Neil Peart

To be honest, I think he was just really, really high, or is a Hobbit freak.
ETA Probably dug Orwell, and science fiction, as well.
