You can cheat on the Barre chords, Lord knows I did and still do.
You can cheat on all chords by moving them around, especially if you can do it fast and cleanly. You only need 3 notes to make a major chord, or a minor. If you can change quickly between positions and shapes playing minimal notes in each, you can get some pretty good sounding stuff going sometimes.

I'm not saying you can't. I'm just encouraging people to keep working on barre chords since it will actually make playing some songs easier in the end.

Oh, for damn certain, and not only that, but to break up your sound a little bit from the first position chords, to throw in a bit of accent.
It's so easy to go from a Barred Major chord to it's 4th with 1 finger and then to it's minor, so lightning fast, and it sounds like some great lick, but it's so easy.
This is a really great thread. A lot of good playing discussion going on.

Justin does not recommend that method of doing A in his beginner course.
This is the one Im trying to get and having trouble with it. But I will get it. Getting easier.

Was just hoping to help Lanier see chords more as a collection of notes and less a particular formation. Not that he's doing anything wrong; gaining that muscle memory is the first step (and something we continue to do).
(1) First position chords and next (2) maybe barre chords for voicing's... and dBass extensions... and triads and scales. It's about enjoying each and every stop along the way that makes it all fun.

Im slow with them. The D, I can grab most of the time. The A is still one finger at at time. Im having a little trouble switching between the two with any speed and getting my fingers on the strings correctly. Its getting somewhat easier but I dont seem to be pressing the thinnest string down hard enough on the D when I switch back and forth. Maybe its a lazy finger or maybe its because it is tighter. Not sure. At times, I have my finger on there correctly but Im just not pressing hard enough...
I have to admit, its much harder than I thought but time seems to fly by when Im doing it.

Man, you're gonna get it. I like the way that you are attacking it. Keep it up.
Maybe try some finger exercize when you don't have a guitar in your hands. squeezing on a little rubber ball with your weaker fingers maybe.

It's all about building that dexterity bro. Solid purchase on the Taylor btw. Do you know what gauge strings you have on there?
eta: to clarify...I was asking about the diameter of the top string. For example, I play what's commonly called 13's. That means the diameter of the top string is .013. Do you know what's on yours?

Great, keep it up. Maybe try to "pivot" from the D chord to the A chord, meaning keep finger on the G string move the other 2 to their spots on the D and B string, bingo it's an A. Reverse it to how you started, bingo its a D.
Again, though, don't do too much and stay on just a few chords until you get stronger, your dexterity improves, and you build up muscle memory.
That D chord will come up in a few common 3 chord progressions: D G A; A D E; G C D. That's only 5 chords which will get you playing a ton of music.

This is what we put on there. Guy who helped me find the guitar picked these out.

Those strings are fine. Better than black diamonds from the Rexall drug store.

... in that case you might wait to change strings for 2-3 months.

Lanier... Have you found or has anyone recommended chordify.net?
Shows you the chords while you play along with a YouTube video. LINK

I only play the Barre Chords that I can't play an Open Chord of.
I play a B and a Bb using a 2 finger Barre Chord.
Other than those 2,I play only Open Chords.
I'm not comfortable playing Barre Chords,so I don't.
It's just the way I play.

I will check in to that today. Going to have some playing time once I get my work done this afternoon. Wife insists.

Just get those 3 chords bombproof and you'll be fine for a while.
That and in the back of your mind try listening to them as you strum slowly... there's only three notes in these chords ... see if you can detect which ones repeat. Without going into deep theory, these are all made of the 1, 3, and 5 notes of whatever scale (chord) your playing. No matter if they are 5 or 6 string chords, they only have three different (but repeating) notes. They are only composed of these three.
Listening or getting to work on ear training will only help. ...eta: and don't worry - it's a skill you develop

Another thing to think about: where and how are you sitting. when you play?
Have you looked at that? It really makes a difference.
I like a stool, that is just a bit higher than a kitchen chair. Feet flat on the floor, knees a 90 degree angle to my back. Nothing close that I can bump, or have to worry about.

Are you using the one finger or the three finger method for the A?
Posted on 12/9/19 at 3:38 am to BigOrangeBri
Don't want to answer for another person, but in this case I will.
He is using 3 fingers for the Amaj. Right thing to do at this juncture. best thing to do. Later on, he can get sloppy like the rest of us.
