My buddy and I were discussing the other day why soup the song never made it on soup the album. Its a really great song.
After further investigation cuz I was curious too.
Blind Melon lead singer Shannon Hoon wrote this song about Kurt Cobain, the Nirvana frontman who took his own life in April 1994. Like Cobain, Hoon also struggled with drug addiction, and on October 21, 1995 he died from a drug overdose.
In our interview with Blind Melon guitarist Christopher Thorn, he said: "When he sang the lyric, 'I will pull the trigger and make you all go away,' I knew it was about Kurt Cobain. I had goose pumps for days after hearing that - and still do when I hear the song now."
Soup is also the name of Blind Melon's second album. This song was written for it, but didn't make the cut. Shannon Hoon died a few months after the album was released, so the song was included on their 1996 album Nico
Wow!! I didn’t know that song was about Cobain. Now I do which is why the music board is my favorite

Being in Starkville during that time, they were obviously extremely popular.

Man now you’re taking me back. I used to party with those guys. Met them when they came to open up for that July ‘93 show at the Varsity. They opened for Inclined (another great band), who opened for Blind Melon. They actually lived in BR for a little while.

It's possibly my favorite song by BM. When it transitions to the "I'll make it all go away" part, I get goosebumps every time. Just the way Hoon delivers his vocals feels so authentic. You can feel the pain yourself. It's incredible.

They are from the same town in Iowa.
There is a blind melon book called the devil on one shoulder angel on the other or something like that. It’s a weird read bc it’s interviews and stories told through the voices of people who were there. You learn a lot about the band from the beginning to the end.
Fun fact: they recorded the music to soup at Kingsway in New Orleans and I own a piece of equipment used by them once owned by Daniel Lanois himself. Subtle brag.

It absolutely killed at woodstock too.
I saw them the Friday night before Woodstock at the Stone Pony, it was a warmup gig for the festival.
Top 10 show all time for me.

Back in college we were down in New Orleans and the back gate was open to kingsway (went to check it out as we all love blind melon). We kinda walked into the back a little worried we would get in trouble. But, a guy walks up and we explain ourselves and he let us walk around the grounds for a bit. Didn’t go in but was cool nonetheless.

Go to the 1:50 mark & the 4:41 mark of the Motley Crue Wild Side video & you can see a teenage Shannon Hoon in the audience. The video was filmed at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, IN. He confirmed with friends that it was him in the video & he & some friends drove down from West Lafayette to go the show.
