I have really been thinking about building one, but parts will cost me almost that much.
The CV stuff has always been really good too IMHO. Upgrading them is easy if needed.
Hopefully GC will have one in stock soon to try out.
Sweetwater already has them.

I almost ordered one last night, but I'm just going to put a Bigsby on my yellow Telly.
I can do that for a couple hundred bucks.
It's got a set of Fretshack's P90s in it and I know it's a great guitar already. It's got all the good stuff.
It's tempting to order a new guitar sometimes, but it's not always the best thing to do.
Those p90s become a humbucker in the middle position, so that guitar could do anything the new one would do and will never need upgrading.

Is a poplar tele as clear and bright as swamp ash? Not sure I want a tele with less twang.

I like poplar just fine. I don't think the body wood of a solid body guitar, matters nearly as much as much as pickups, switches and hardware.
Build quality matters too, how snug the neck fits the pocket, pickup adjustment stuff like that.

The guy I jam with is also a luthier and his work on my Classic Vibes (Strat and Jazzmaster) has changed his mind on Squiers. We've upgraded both over three years, but even as as stock they play and sound good. A great entry level instrument.

Love the look of the one you posted, Auggie. Fender has fun with their Squier line.

I’m surprised it’s north of 500 bucks. Still a good buy. Either love the PUPs or swap them out. As mentioned, to build your own will get near that price plus the time you spend and unless you own a body shop and a wood shop?? You’re gonna screw something up.

I wouldn't say that, not for a solid body electric. It's pretty easy to do with basic tools.
You can buy finished alder bodies from Allen Eden that are good quality, everything predrilled.
You can find some pretty nice necks on reverb for reasonable prices. Everything else too.
The final setup is the hardest part, but you can get that done by a pro if needed.
