By all accounts, TMV went......pop?
Yea, super accessible and pop vibes apparently.
Should be real interesting

It’s official: The Mars Volta have announced their first new album in a decade. The self-titled LP is due September 16. The Mars Volta are also releasing a new song called “Vigil” today to celebrate the news. Check it out below.
The Mars Volta is 14 tracks long and includes the previously released singles “Blacklight Shine” and “Graveyard Love.” Like those two songs, “Vigil” is a brisk number that’s far away from their prog-rock heyday, clocking in around three minutes. A press release states that the new album has only two tracks that are longer than four minutes and that the new record finds guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala at “their most mature, most concise, most focused.”
Next month, the Mars Volta will hit the road for a North American tour

It's strange. It's not really pop, but that's about the closest descriptor I can think of for this album.
I feel like past TMV albums/songs always had a sense of tension and urgency, and that's definitely missing on this one.

After the first listen, I love it.
It's much different and I always wanted them to explore the more slower stuff.
The world is a better place with Omar and Cedric making music in it

I wasn't thrilled with the singles when they came out. But I've given the album a few spins and I must say that I am very surprised at how much I'm enjoying it. I was sort of expecting this to be something like Antemasque, which IMO was pretty boring. I also wasn't a fan of At the Drive In's new albums since they reformed, so I figured that Omar and Cedric just didn't have "it" any more. But this album...there's something else there. Some of the songs are pretty funk / soul too.
I think this one is a grower, and that's a good thing. The best TMV albums were that way for me.

Liking it. It bit subdued but decent. Not their best work.

I like that it's gonna take some time to really digest it. It has depth. There's a lot of misses, but a lot of good.

Thanks for the heads up. Pulling up to listen to now. I feel like Deloused started them out at the top and it's gone progressively down hill. I'm two tracks in and I understand what y'all mean....pop is really the best way to describe this but it's not really pop. It's about as accessible a sound as Mars Volta has ever had.

Hopefully this album will grow on me but I find it very underwhelming. There is no energy at all. I am glad they are back making music though
