Is awesome. Very different from what they would become. I loved that album but that was my limit.

I dated a psycho in high school that was obsessed with U2. It seemed pretty strange because nobody was really talking about U2 at the time. A couple of months after we split up, The Joshua Tree came out and they were everywhere.
I will always associate their music with the crazy chick. It's hard not to. Plus, I got really sick of U2 around the same time. They played the shite out of the tracks from The Joshua Tree on the radio and Mtv.

I heard New Year's Day on WRNO on the way to the Def Leppard Pyromania concert as I was coming out of my Led Zeppelin years.
Not sure how that's directly relevant to anything in particular, but it seems to communicate quite a bit about my music listening history.

I agree that many of the tracks were overplayed at the time, but even the non-single/video tracks from that album are awesome.

Like some of their stuff, dislike some. They’re decent IMO. Never got the appeal of “One” at all as a major hit.

I like most of U2s deep cuts as opposed to their well-known singles.

That hate went into overdrive when iTunes automatically uploaded one of their albums to everyone’s ipod and iphone.
This is the fulcrum that pried U2 from a beloved band destined to be fondly remembered to the hated caricature of its former glory we have now.

I understand folks decades later dissing a band that's "overplayed its welcome" if you will, but the above statement is ON.

Always laughed at folks' response to this. All this hatred in the pre-streaming age from folks who stole most of the music on their ipods.

"Do You Feel Loved" from the 'Pop' album has a mean bass groove
