Anyone that says Prince was over rated as a guitar needs to have their phucking head examined. I'm no Prince fan boy, but when you see him at the Rock n Roll Hall of fame tribute to George Harrison he absolutely kills it. When stars like Tom Petty, Steve Winwood and Jeff Lynne step back and let him take over they know how good he is. At about the 3:30 mark where he takes over.

Not a great vocalist.

I will need to hear who you consider a great vocalist before I can reply.

Hit us with a few.

Prince is my #1 pop artist.

Also has the best half time performance doing purple rain in the rain.

Actually wish they would have played that more at LSU games.

Guy is also responsible for other artists hit songs.

Though Nicks co-wrote "Stand Back", she credited Prince with the essential synth arrangement that defined the track, which reached No.  5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

People get really offended if someone voices an opinion that critiques this guy.

I don't know...

I'm a fan of the Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Dylan, Petty, ABB, Merle Haggard, Zep, Skynyrd, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, George Jones, The Who... If someone doesn't care for them, I'm not going to get so offended to the point of trying to insult them.

It's all subjective.

Nasty Girl- Vanity 6
Jungle Love, Jerk Out- The Time
The Glamorous Life, A Love Bizarre- Sheila E.
I Feel For You- Chaka Khan
Sugar Walls- Sheena Easton
Manic Monday- The Bangles
Kiss- Tom Jones
Nothing Compares 2 U- Sinead O'Conner
Round and Round- Tevin Campbell
Love... Thy Will Be Done- Martika
How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore- Alicia Keys

Just a small sample of chart hits he wrote for other artists or they had a hit covering one of his songs.

Here's a full thread on this topic from December 2024. I stand by my remarks:

quote:

I love the song and can appreciate the solo, but I've always found the worship of it to be completely over the top. It's almost become a proxy for people who don't care/know all that much about guitar playing to have a talking point that let's them pretend that they do.

It's a totally fine solo. I personally think it's out of phase with the song itself.

quote:

I'm fully aware that he was a phenomenal instrumentalist. I just don't care about him having an extended masturbation session on a classic song that wasn't his.

Lots of other good observations in there, especially this one:

quote:

Prince is great. If anyone else played that solo note-for-his-notes, it doesn't get any recognition. It's just a bluesy wank with a couple of flurries thrown in.

Just of the ones I know of...Nasty Girl,
Jungle Love, The Glamorous Life,
I Feel For You, Sugar Walls, Manic Monday, Kiss, Nothing Compares 2 U. ...these songs suck.

The rest of them, I have no clue of.

Prince was a musical genius. On his debut album, For You, he played every instrument on the album: 27 in all, including the electric guitar, clavinet, congas, waterdrums, electric piano, finger cymbals, hand claps and several other synthesizers.

So basically he had to come up with a concept and pre-production, write the songs, compose the music, record each instrument separately, mix and master the song, arrange the album songs, produce the album, and release it.

Remember when "the artist" played Time Plaza in Lafayette ?

Because the tastemakers and critics of music are all journalists the field of music “rating” is completely dominated by liberals. Therefore you see mediocre white guys like Bruce Springsteen and Dave Matthews lauded as geniuses because of their band members and the “greatest” are dei candidates. When the listener is able to pick out an objective “great” act that isn’t a dei outfit the ivory tower criticizes them for “stealing from black musicians”; see Elvis, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, etc

What’s crazy is that Bruce Springsteen and John mellencamp are basically the same person except one has a diverse band but Bruce is a “legend” and John is made fun of

They both suck hard, musically and politically.

I agree with you on both politically, and Springsteen music sucks.

But I love Cougar's music.
