And this is my view. "Hipster" is a fashion now if you are under 30. I meet so many people that dress " hipster" but they are just avg suburban people. It reminds me of some pictures of my uncle from the 60 s. He looked like a Beatnik.....which really is where the hipster movement comes from. But my uncle was just an avg, conservative but fun loving southeast Texas boy. If you want to understand hipsters, read about beatniks.

Absolutely. I've said it before, they are basically retread beatniks.
The beat generation folks were often called hipsters in the late 50's and early 60's.

I feel like the term "hipster" is being used in a way that it should be. For me, and my friends from Austin and Houston, the term "hipster" is used to describe the clothing and lifestyle certain people choose; most of the bands listed are just some offshoot of "indie."
IMHO there are no hipster bands, just hipster people who listen to specific music.
Hipsters only listen to music that's cool to listen to. And they have surmised that cool is only cool if it comes wrapped in obscurity.
So there isn't a "type" of hipster musci. It's just whatever music meets the difficult test of being good enough for their ears but not good enough for anybody to have discovered.
Hipsters have it tough, man. You gotta be on your game. I mean, listening to that John Mayer bootleg back in 2000 seemed like a good idea. Nobody knew what was gonna happen. Right?

Arcade Fire may be a hipster band but they are legit.

Typically a Hipster can be identified by vintage or thrift-store bougt clothing, shuns the mainstream (but embraces it if its ironic) a taste for obscure or underground music, a penchant for irony and an elitist attitude.
Isn't that pretty much what a hipster is?

Tight pants
Vans (which really pisses me off because the grand majority of them can't skateboard worth a shite)

Girl jeans
Don't think vans are ironic enough

Most hipsters in the Marigny/Bywater wear either jeans or jorts with lace up leather dress shoes or Vans.

Boat shoes with no socks

Boat shoes span all social stereotypes.

Typically worn by frat stars. Hipster look at this as a power move and at the same time, ironic.

This is the thing I have qualms with in reference to calling someone "hipster."
I shop at Urban Outfitters (not specifically, just every once in awhile), I listen to indie music, I go to concerts primarily filled with a lot of the bands listed in this thread.
Now, I don't consider myself a "hipster" in any sense of the word. I consider myself a guy who likes the style of dress because the opposite would be dressing in polo shirts and seersucker (a.k.a. "frat"). I, also, listen to mainstream music when it floats my boat but for the most part I have a lot of the bands listed in here on rotation. Does this make me a hipster in other people's eyes? I don't care. I just like the music.
This is why I feel the term "hipster" is subjective. It's a mindset and fashion statement, it happens that they listen to the music ya'll list in here. However, I can listen to Band of Horses or The Felice Brothers (there's an obscure one for you) but not cross the line and throw someone through the fire and claim "you're not a true fan, you're a poser."
But, I will say, most of the bands you guys have listed on here, to me, would not be considered "hipster" but more mainstream. If you really want to define it then it the band should be more obscure.
