He gets a ton of praise, but to you folks who know, what actually makes him a great drummer? To the mostly untrained ear, i dont hear anything special that separates him from others....genuinely curious-

Really really excellent songwriting.
No one believes that Dave Grohl is the best drummer ever, but every band he’s been in has been hugely successful for good reason. He’s a very competent drummer who knows how to stay in the pocket, where he can build and release tension, and how to write really catchy music. There are faster drummers, more unique drummers, and drummers with better technique, but Dave will always be one of the most prolific rock n roll songwriters of all time, and one of the few drummers with claim to that categorization.

So very marketable, yes.

He’s not all hype. He wrote every song on the first foo fighters album and played every instrument on it. That’s not just hype, that’s serious talent. He was the Tom Scholz of the 90’s, except he also sang.
He hit it out of the park on Foo Fighters’ first album, yet consistently delivered on subsequent albums, not even reaching a creative peak for nearly TWENTY YEARS!!! Yeah, Foo Fighters’ best album was nearly 20 years after their first one, and they really didn’t start declining until about 5 years ago, which is crazy long for a band that’s been consistently relevant the entire time. They released the second worst album of their career last year, and it still won a f$&king grammy!

I know that album sold a lot, but it's not that great. It's a lowest common denominator thing. It's a fine record and when it comes on at the grocery store it's fine, but I never say hey, let's listen to the foo fighters.

Which one? Their self titled album, Wasting Light, or Waiting on a War? I agree that the last one of those is pretty bad (that’s their third album in a row which I haven’t cared much for).
However, I love Wasting Light as well as nearly every album leading up to it. Probably my favorite Foo Fighters song is The Pretender

I get it, a lot of people love the foo fighters. They are just a decent radio band IMO, kind of like Pearl Jam. The wierd thing is the Christian rock musicians I know that play at the mega churches love both those bands.

Some people like stripped down, straight-forward music. Some people like meandering jazz rock fusion jam bands. Other people like prog metal. Some dgentlemen love grindcore and black metal. There’s even people out there who like 100 Gecs. I just have a lot of respect for Foo Fighters for remaining relevant in pop culture and continuing to get radio play for as long as they have. Pretty much just them and Red Hot Chili Peppers managing to keep trucking that long without being relegated to being a “Greatest Hits” era legacy act.

Fair enough, I'm just busting your chops.

Wasting Light is the best thing they ever did.

Because he was inspired by / ripping off disco drummers
ETA: This is not meant as an “attack” on Dave Grohl, he himself said it.
If you watch the clip he told Chic drummer Tony Thompson who came to his house for a barbecue one time. “I was like, ‘Man, I just want to thank you because I owe you so much I’ve been ripping you off my whole life.’ He goes, ‘I know.’”
He’s a great musician and ambassador for rock.

When people dis on a talented musician just because they don't like him, it shows ignorance. I may not like Dave, but to think he's only where he is because he's marketable and not tremendously talented is just stupid.

What does this have to do with anything? You can probably find folks in most walks of life who like Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam, yet you felt the need to point this group out. Talk about weird.

Great frontman and marketer, yes….
