No, no they weren't. Those were the downswing years. '97 is amazing with the slow funk and all around great playing, but frankly it was all a slow decline from there, mostly related to the band's increased drug usage, especially Trey. I mean I can barely listen to the "ambient" garbage in '99-'00, that stuff bores me to tears.
To say pre-97 Phish is all 3 band members just backing up Trey is utterly ridiculous. Have you listened to some of the 40+ Tweezers from 94-95? I'm talking like Crazy innovative playing from the whole band, with different ideas just flowing from one to the other the whole time, often with very little "lead" guitar parts going on at all.
Phish is a band in that all four members play together. Not like the Dead, where all four members just sort of play stuff at the same time, or like Panic where every song sounds exactly the same and it's just Jimmy playing millions of tweedle-deedle-deedle notes over and over again for a whole show, it's a cohesive unit on stage with Phish.
This is starting to get off topic, but I completely disagree with calling 97-00 the "downswing" years. 1997 is generally thought of as the greatest year, 98 (especially summer+Island Tour) was fricking sweet. 99 is kinda rough but Summer 2000 is a triumphant return to greatness.
I love it all though. '84-'12

Wow some hipster writer decided that Arcade Fire and Bruce Springsteen are the greatest thing ever.
Animal Collective (a much better "indie" band than Arcade Fire) sampled the Grateful Dead for What Would I Want? Sky .
You also said you don't like the Doors (plus the fact you are championing Springsteen- one of the most overrated artists ever), so whatevs, you already established you don't have a good taste in music.
I was disputing your comment that people in their 50s from NJ are the only people who like the BS... So, stick to the point at hand
Sorry but most people's infatuation with the Doors end after high school... and you've established your musical taste as elementary and boring...

Wait, innovative? Whatever you say buddy. If you dont think that the late 90s was the peak of phish i cant help you.

Wha- I mean, I don't even. I'm not even going to bother going there
It just all kind of sounds like one big continuous, repetitive, boring thing to me. And this is coming from someone who loves the Disco Biscuits, the kings of long repetitive jams. I can only take so many wailing guitar Southern rock jams before I just get bored with it.

Bruce Springstein is the worst popular musician of all time. He's awful.

frick you. I actually take offense to that. Please cite how my musical tastes are elementary and boring. The funniest part is that this is coming from someone trying to say that Springsteen is more important than the Dead. I'm pretty sure even Bruce would tell you to go frick yourself.

This post is pretty spot on. I never got to see Panic with Houser and regret that. I've seen them 10+ times over the years and have never had a single jam stick out. I've had a great time at their shows and its a great party but overall it is musically lacking.
Come to think of it the best WSP highlight I've experienced live is them opening up with Born on the Bayou at Lakefront Arena Halloween 2008.

I motion that we change the thread title now to: "Whiny hippies arguing miniscule jam band differences"

Awww man, I didn't even get a "mon" at the end of your sentence. You are slacking Souljah. Those Phish jams do tend to run together so maybe you got lulled to sleep.

It seems like if you like jam bands you either love phish or you love wsp. Very few people I know actually love both and I don't understand why
Posted on 6/27/12 at 9:56 am to CottonWasKing
Because WSP is fat and has no talent

And you're kidding yourself if you don't think Bruce is as big or surpasses the freaking dead...
Look dude, you're probably right. Right now in 2012, Bruce Springsteen is probably the bigger deal. But, Jerry Garcia has been dead for almost 18 years!!in 1995 when Jerry was still alive and The Grateful Dead were still a band, Bruce doesn't get mentioned in the same breath as Jerry or The Dead. And I'm not even ready to totally commit to saying that 18 years after the band that they're not still a bigger deal than Bruce.
I like Bruce. There's something about some of those songs that I like a lot. I don't like to get into the band competition thing but You're just wrong here.
It's pretty obvious from your posts that you know next to nothing about the grateful dead besides probably listening to the Skeletons In The Closet greatest hits cd.
I think being 18 years since the man died that you don't appreciate how huge he was. He would sell out JGB shows at Madison Square Garden on the reg.
The Grateful Dead sold out some of the biggest venues in the country for years. I'm not saying Bruce doesn't do that too but not for as long as GD did it. They played Woodstock and Altamont. They played with The Allman Brothers, and The Band in front of 600,000+ at Watkins Glen.
To suggest that Bruce Springsteen is a bigger folk music influence than Jerry Garcia is just down right ignorant. Bob Dylan was about as big of a Jerry fan as you could be. Ever heard of Old And In The Way? The Pizza Tapes?
shite, Bruce from time to time covers The Grateful Dead's arrangement of Morning Dew.
The Grateful Dead alone played close to 2,500 shows. That's not to mention Jerry Garcia Band, Legion of Mary, Old And In The Way, and other shows Jerry was playing.
Rock, Jazz, Folk, country, blues, reggae, psychedelic rock... You name it they played it and they influenced.
No doubt Bruce is a huge act but The Grateful Dead are in another tier here.
It's ok to be wrong.

Why are you knuckleheads comparing the Dead and Bruce? They are 2 totally different artists.
And Trey, anyone that made "Nebraska" (the album) should not in any way be called the worst popular musician of all time. That is just stupid.
I would say Phish's prime was 1995 (although Fall '97 is my favorite tour). '94 and '97 are my favorite years. 1999 was definitely the start of the decline, but Japan 2000 had some amazing shows (I love some of the ambient jams).
I use to be a big fan of both WSP and Phish, but I don't listen to WSP anymore. They bore the hell out of me now. Still listen to Phish though.
