I think we have the same friend. I think the EDM culture is just a way for people to extend childhood by inventing some sort of deeper meaning to taking road trips and rolling with your friends. Their FB stuff is cringeworthy and I am embarrassed for them.

It's like the second coming of jam bands.

For girls it's probably more the scene than the drugs
But it's the drugs too
But it's the drugs too

First and foremost let me say that I am from Atlanta, which is a HUGE hub for electronic music in the South. We host Counterpoint and Tomorrowworld, and Athens (where UGA is) people get down like no one else. I've been listening to electronic music since 2007, but now I rarely listen to electronic unless its Nightmares on Wax, Holy Ghost or Four Tet, etc. Other than that I'll stick with my SCI or Umph, Django Django and Gary Clark Jr, I'll listen to pretty much anything as long as its good. The "rave" culture bothers me just as much as the next person! Going to shows used to be fun, in 2008 when Lorin was touring for Underground Communication (or Cozza Frenzy, I can't remember which tour it was) I ran into a group of people taking molly and was introduced to the "rave" culture.
The main reason that electronic is blowing up really is the drug culture behind it. Have you noticed how many songs talk about Mollie now? Mollie is the new Mary Jane for many people, in fact I have met people who prefer to roll rather than smoking. Raves are popular because its difficult to distinguish between what is good and bad electronic music. They provide people with a sense of belonging, coupled with the mollie and BOOM you've got a room full of sweaty people raging hard to an artist that most likely is not that talented.
That being said, I love festivals. I will never ever go to an electronic festival such as Ultra or Tomorrowworld or EDC (Buku is even too electronic). But I've been to Waka, Bonnaroo, Summer Camp, Electric Forest, Lollapalooza, Jazzfest, Music Midtown, and Counterpoint. At each of these festivals you'll see plenty of people on drugs only enjoying the music because they are zonked out of their minds. But you will also encounter true fans of the artists playing the festivals (I met a couple at Roo 2012 that drove all the way from Juneau, Alaska just to see Radiohead and Red Hot!), sometimes these fans will be on drugs and sometimes they won't. Music festivals are not about the drug use, they are about the experience. Sure they are "dirty" but if you enjoy the outdoors as many do, its a fun way to camp with your friends while seeing your favorite bands and who doesn't love that?
So don't be so quick to judge festivals! I always tell people to try going to one (there are festivals without camping) because its such a great value seeing so many artists for such a relatively cheap price.
The rave thing isn't going anywhere soon unfortunately, hopefully people will realize just how stupid they look in those neon bro tanks and bejeweled bras and the fluffies (why wear fluffy boots if you're only wearing a bra and spandex…are you hot or cold?!) with the light up pacifiers in their mouths.
Sorry for the rant!

Hopefully the EDM fad goes away soon.
back in like 2005 & 2006 it was the cool thing to hate on.
The new people to the scene, seem to be the ones going to shows taking way to much molly or popping rolls like skittles and then end up dead or in the hospital. They are also the Krewella Skrillix type crowd as well.

The only time I ever heard a techno song was from the DDR machine at the arcade.

pretty much, first time i had an electronic music experience was in 2001 when i was Paul Oakenfold closing a dc are rock festival that would also get jay-z and eminem. Had no idea I was seeing a legend.
WVU has a huge electronic scene and has for years due to the amount of students from the east coast, esp nyc/nj and dc which dominate the east coast electronic scene. We used to get some pretty good mid tier in popularity dj's to do sets at the clubs we had back in like 2006. shite the school got Kaskade to spin for the schools annual fall fest on the first day of class not to long ago.
