firing Monty to hire Gentry? Completely boneheaded decision.

What was dumb was having a roster that Gentry would like coached by Monty and having a roster full of bigs coached by Gentry.

I’m very interested to see who Griffin would hire. His last two hires, if I’m correct, we’re David Blatt and Tyron Lue.

It is completely appalling to me that we would turn this organization upside down, clean house on the entire front office, a chunk of the roster, on the training staff and facilities but leave a retread coach in place who has failed at every stint as a head coach.

Gentry handled last year about as well as he could and Griffin was familiar with him. By the time they settled the executive office, I’m not sure who else was available as head coach. And it’s been widely speculated that Gentry would finish the season then move upstairs.

Now if Gentry starts off as coach next year, that’s unforgivable IMO.

I meant from a “moving forward” standpoint. I understood why he was retained for this season, but going forward it makes zero sense.

but who are logical replacements?

As long as the coach wears glasses and supports analytics I'm good with whomever.

Yes. Monty was released Not long after the second half collapse against the Warriors in the playoffs.

If we make the playoffs this year, I think the odds are that Al is not fired in the off-season . But what do I know? Regardless, making the playoffs would be a good thing for these youngsters.

I think Monty is a decent coach, but at the time, it made sense to let him go.

Grit and Grind Grizzlies were one of the slowest teams in the NBA...

That would not be ideal with this roster

Chris Mack
jay wright
Tony Bennett
Dana Altman
Chris Holtmann (coached with Brad Stevens)

But I really like Kevin Sampson. He would be a head coach if he didn’t tarnish his history with the NCAAB scandal. He got nba expertise and turn Houston college 180.

I mean he’s fine, possibly a slight improvement, but nothing about him screams “elite coach

Don’t think it’s that easy to find an “elite” coach just waiting for a job. Coaching hires will be inherently risky if you want to actually find a new elite coach. Some college coaches have worked (Stevens) and some have not (Beilein). Nick Nurse was just an assistant coach that the Toronto exec’s gave a chance, now he’s one of the best. We can’t just hire an established Pop or Stevens- like coach

Yes, we made the mistake of letting Monty go after making the playoffs

This board had been calling for his head for quite a while, now everyone is backtracking.

I would have to say I want Mark Jackson. Dude took the young warriors team and made them great. Then Steve Kerr swooped in and sucked up all the glory.

Jay Wright will be incredibly tough to get. We’d have to give him a huge salary and Josh Hart would have to try to convince him to come here. Seems like he really likes philly/northeast.

I think many coaches would be salivating at the chance to coach this roster
