Yea after hearing the chatter all week about the severity of the injury and that most players take 2 years to return to form (and even that's a gamble) my spirits started to crumble.

Understandable. So the question becomes are we willing to add a second rounder and/or Diallo to include Ajinca while only taking back Grant?

When you hit the 10 year mark the max goes from 30% to 35%.

Players with 10 accrued seasons are eligible to receive a 35% max contract. Boogie has 2 more years for 10 in the league. He can sign a 2+1, then opt out of the last year if he returns to form and sign a 35% contract.

In a heartbeat.
Get off Ajinca's contract and add a useful piece for a young project and a 2nd rounder...where do I sign up?

That's a bizarre part of the CBA for me. Probably a Chris Paul special for the old vets. Frankly, by the time most guys reach 10 years, they're toward the end of their prime and that contract will end up being a bad deal for the team.

Yeah I know that I thought he was trying to say offer him a max contract for 10 years

Shows how good Mirotic has been playing AND how fricked up our salaries are for that team option to be a sticking point.
Mirotic got rocked in the face and missed time after getting in multiple fights to begin the season. Not only that, the Bulls players were on Portis' side. Then he comes back and demands a trade for one of them, the Bulls oblige, and he makes more demands on the trade? Wow.
The Pelicans are squabbling about a stretch 4 with an insane PER and Net Rating who's shooting 42+% from three making $12m next season.
I'm hoping that we are playing hardball, but this is a really funny situation playing out when you step back.

I am a bit surprised the $12.5M option is really a hold up. I want Chicago to exercise it so we get his Bird Rights. Gives us the option to resign. Unless he has a catastrophic injury I think we can dump salary if need be. It makes no sense to only use him as a rental.

For that reason, I feel like this could be a blessing in disguise. Because it sounds like the Pels were not plannning on bringing him back next year
But with the situation now, im wondering if it’ll force Chicago to take Ajinca too.

Yeah I don't think it would be hard to dump him at the deadline next year if we need to get under the tax. Hopefully we're playing hardball with multiple suitors for the 1st rounders and trying to get the best deal.

Yeah it sounds like Dell wanted to stay competitive and dump Asik's salary but didn't have Mirotic in future plans.

Exactly. Demps played hardball with Sac and ended up trading for one less pick than originally proposed because Cousins Agent started running his mouth. We'll see if that's the case here, but Dealing Dell has been better since Danny Ferry came on board in an official capacity.

From what I understand:
quote:
Pelicans do not want to impede their ability to resign Cousins, but Mirotic wants the security of his team option picked up before the trade. Bulls may have to take on an additional contract or convince Niko to take the risk.

Even as a rental it works out to get Asik's contract off the books next year, plus another $3M saved from a 2019-2020 buyout.
Posted on 1/30/18 at 1:53 pm to Mystictiger
I feel like Mirotic could easily get 20mill+ on the open market. Kind of weird that he WANTS the option picked up. I would have assumed he didn't want it picked up.

If we get him, I hope he's here longterm. Mirotic, AD, and Cousins form a perfect 3 man rotation at PF and C. The team will need to monitor Boogie's minutes once he returns anyway.
Posted on 1/30/18 at 1:55 pm to Parrish
It honestly sounds like the Pels are trying to pull a "Racial Draft" esque trade with the team option addition.
"Wait, hold up now Darnelle? You can't swindle a swindler."

Not so sure. From Kevin O'Connor:

What also doesn't make sense is I'm hearing the Pelicans have been trying to dump Asik with their first—not trying to get value back (like Mirotic). Why don't Bulls deal Mirotic for value to another team, then absorb Asik into cap room and get the Pelicans first? Weird situation.
